The energy industry has become a vital component of our modern-day society, as energy consumption has been increasing with the socio-economic development. Because of its fundamental role in human life, it has become an essential part of the infrastructure and maintenance of society in almost all countries. The energy industry has been in a process of change which supports usage of renewable resources (biomass, hydroelectric, solar, geothermal, etc.) instead of traditional non-renewable resources (natural gas, coal, etc.). Managing the energy network with many distributed power generators became a challenging task with the increase of power production from renewable sources. Another challenge for the industry is managing the downstream of energy supply chain which consists of enormous number of customers. For these reasons, digitalization, as well as Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), has a very important position in the energy industry for both management of supply chain and customer relationships. In the view of this fact, this research aims to evaluate diffusion of the main digitalization tools supporting supply chain Management in the Italian energy industry, mostly with the focus of electricity supply chain, and to identify their impact in terms of real value creation capability. Moreover, the research analyzes the practices of ICT for internal communication and storage. The methodology that the research follows has been organized in three macro phases: (i) literature review, which is essential to gain the necessary theoretical background in order to develop the research; (ii) empirical analysis, with some case studies of Italian companies belonging to different levels of the energy supply chain; (iii) findings, which is concluded from an extensive analysis of the information obtained with the purpose of determining the indispensable components that meet the work objectives.
