This research attempts to evaluate the effect of the 2001 IMF reforms on selected macro variables in Turkey. First, we employed the difference-in-difference method. Due to various limitations of this method, this paper further implemented synthetic counterfactual methodology. To overcome non-randomness, we added extra covariates to existing predeterminant variables that are believed to influence IMF programme participation. With this novel approach, credible counterfactuals have been created. According to results, the 2001 reforms made a positive contribution to GDP per capita, income inequality, and foreign direct investment. Export, on the other hand, have been negatively affected. Nonetheless, placebo study indicated that only the result on income inequality is statistically significant.
