Özet (Çeviri)
Turkey is a non-nuclear weapon state (NNWS) of the Treaty on the NonProliferation of Nuclear Weapons and been faithful to her treaty responsibilities. Despite being close to natural resource-rich countries Turkey is poor on resources from which she can generate energy. Her lack of natural resources results in dependency on energy imports to satisfy her energy demand. Turkey wants to increase her energy security by acquiring peaceful nuclear energy. Many questions have been raised regarding Turkey's nuclear future since Turkey has accelerated her civilian nuclear energy plans with her first commercial nuclear power plant expected to be operational by 2023. Turkey is located in the Middle East, one of the most nuclear proliferation prone regions of the world. Her neighbors have attempted to acquire nuclear weapons before and no one can guarantee that they will not try it again in the future. Despite not having an indigenous nuclear deterrence as a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Turkey benefits from an extended deterrence provided by her NATO allies, particularly by the United States (U.S.). In this thesis, we will explore the connection between the U.S./NATO extended deterrence and Turkey's decision to remain as an NNWS of the NPT. While analyzing the connection between them, we will focus on the concepts of deterrence and extended deterrence, alliances, and assurances. The Middle Eastern geopolitical context, to which Turkey is formulating her national security plans, will also be taken into consideration.
