Özet (Çeviri)

This research project by Umut Ozdaloglu entitled 'A study into dance: The ephemeral mode of expression', consists of two parts: A practical performance and a written document. Dance is ephemeral by nature and this research seeks to investigate and try to comprehend this performance experience and its communicative properties. The focus of this study is to explore the ephemeral mode of expression by experimenting with the strands of the dance medium. The first part of the written document looks into the nature of dance as performance art. It is acknowledged that the ephemeral and the expressive attributes of dance are inherent elements that help us define what dance is as a performing art. Dance is often defined as 'the most ephemeral of the art-forms' or the 'art of self-erasure' and this section covers how its transient nature affects the art-form. The potential of dance as a mode of expression is also examined and discussed and insight about the performer within the ephemeral and communicative nature of dance is provided. The second part investigates the strands of the dance medium and their nexial connections. The significance of each strand is stated and it is acknowledged that meaning in dance is not only limited to the moving body in a performance. When watching dance, the audience observes connections between the strands which reveal artistic choices and arrangements. Such recognitions are crucial for evaluating, understanding and appreciating the particularities of a dance work, and its identity and style. The findings and the creative outcome of this research were presented in a performative event on the 13/09/2018 at Trinity Laban Conservatoire for Music and Dance. The presented work '3' involved a film screening and two live performances.
