Özet (Çeviri)
SUMMARY A RESEARCH ON THE FURNITURE DESIGN IN THE MINIMAL HOUSES: THE BEDROOM SAMPLING Looking into the future, the society in a post-modern structure can be said to consist of the people, intellectually mature and conscious to live together not only within the community of its own species but with that of others as well. A responsible attitude like living in a limited amount of space seems to be related with both the cultural progress and the improvement in the social consciousness. Starting from this point, it is found to be essential to build up the arrangements that can provide the optimal comfort level for the consumers living in limited spaces. Learning from Mumford (1979), with the effect of the industrial revolution, the number of labourers and civil service employees became vast in number and the population of the cities increased resulting in the dense usage of urban sites. The first solution to this problem brought by the laborers was to hire each room individually. On the re-arrangement of these houses, one family stayed and lived in each room and from Dublin to Bombay this 'one room for each family' standard kept its validity for a long time. The change caused by the Modern structure, brought on the increase in population and the decline in habitable urban spaces accompanied by the housing problem. Particularly, immigration to the cities did intensify the effects of this process. The more precious the urban sites, the smaller the houses have become yet, design aspects concerning what the appropriate specifications might be for those furniture has not been considered. In addition to this, there is a strict necessity to develop furniture to satisfy the essences of the Modern life. In this thesis, setting out from the problems caused by the existing furniture dimensions and design aspects, it has been dealt with the discussions aimed to reveal the qualifications that can make the furniture adaptable to minimal houses. Here are the observations made in this research:. The minimal house concept is widely accepted in the world and their production is increasing.. The human is in the tendency to change his/her environment according to his/her necessities. Doing this s/he will try to expand the dimensions of the place s/he is living in.. Storage seems to be the leading problem in most houses. It is even more significant in small ones. It is essential to use the available locations in the vertical dimension of the space for storage. To use the non-functional parts ofsome of the furniture for storage can be an other solution for the related problem. This way will it be possible to enlarge the space reserved for living.. The furniture to be designed for minimal houses can be mobile. This way they can be moved away from the activity zone unless they are useful any longer. Until the next time to come for its usage again they can be stored in a cupboard, hung on the wall or in any place. Their size can be minimized or they can become more compact so that they will use up less area in the living space.. The furniture for minimal houses can be designed flexibly so that it can serve for more than only one activity.. Combinable furniture can be thought as a solution to the furniture designed for the minimal houses whose components or the main frame of it can be combined in a special storage unit or within the furniture itself.. To satisfy the requirements of the people changing and increasing in time can be solved by the modular furniture design aspect in the small houses. This way the furniture, most certainly the ones used for storage can be expanded with the addition of new modular components.. The social inputs are to be investigated to determine the requirements of the people living in minimal houses. To do this, the living in minimal houses should be examined. The results can include useful data when making furniture design for the minimal houses. In the first chapter, the definition of the problem has been made. The aim and the essence together with the extends of the research have been defined. In the second chapter, the human measurements have been examined. The body postures for the activities made in the bedrooms have been investigated and the measurements for these postures have been given. In this chapter, the measurements from two different sources have been compared and the most adequate value for small houses has been shown. In the third chapter, the qualifications presumed to be essential for the furniture designed in the minimal houses have been determined and discussed. Included with these qualifications and their definitions are:. Mobility: The utility to pull and push the furniture. Flexibility: The propriety of the furniture for more than one activity.. Conbinable Furniture: The furniture whose dimensions can be reduced by folding, bending, twisting or compressing it.. Storage: The existence of storage units with shelves and drawers in a furniture or the reservation of the unused spaces in the vertical dimension for storage.. Modularity: To make the furniture dimensionally consistent to the changing requirements by adding and/or extracting modular pieces.. Adjustable Furniture: To make the furniture more suitable for the physiognomy of the human by adjusting its width and height and the position of the furniture components. In this section, the examples found on various periodicals have been sown. In the fourth chapter, the method followed in this research has been explained. It has been defined that the research is composed of two separate investigations one of which is the social research. Books have been scanned to extract the data related with the bedroom living, the bedroom furniture and the human-furniture XIrelationship together with the furniture qualifications. In the election of those books, the author, the subject and other signification has not been taken into any consideration. It depends on the free sampling method. The other part of the research is based on the survey made in the small houses. The houses are chosen to be less than 5 years old for they can only reflect the most recent housing comprehension in today's life. It is aimed by the questions in the survey to find out:. The social background of the consumers. The bedroom activities. The qualifications of the furniture. The trial of the observations presented in the first chapter. In the fifth chapter, the findings of the social research has been shown on a table where the qualifications of the furniture derived from the passages in he books searched and the relationships between man and the furniture, furniture and the furniture, furniture and the space have been notified on it. it has been noticed and stated out in this chapter that, most books include passages related with the qualifications of the furniture presumed to make it adaptable for the small houses. The definitions belonging to some most common furniture have been made. The name of the furniture in both English and French has been given in these definitions. In the sixth chapter, the analysis of the survey has been made and the findings have been presented on tables. It has been the finding of this survey that the sampling group do not reflect the true position in the social scale of Turkey. The selected group has been observed to be quite well educated and the social state of these people is quite higher than the national standards. It has been found out that half of the people living in the sampled houses owned their houses while the other half rented them. 65% of the people surveyed are female and the reminder 35% is male. Nearly 50% of the people are observed to be originally from the city they currently live in. It has also been determined that the activities taking place in the minimal house bedrooms do not only consist of sleeping. Most people use the bedroom for dealing with their recreational activities and studying or doing some work to support their professional life. The duration for the activities achieved in the surveyed houses are fisted on two different tables considering the times both during the week and at the weekends. XIIThe consumers have been asked to write down the activities they think it is difficult to achieve and their reasons where the following findings have been retrieved: The qualifications related with the furniture used in the minimal houses are analyzed. The consumers have been asked whether their furniture have the following qualifications: The Principal Qualifications. Mobility. Flexibility. Conbinable furniture. Storage. Modularity. Adjustable furniture XIIIThe Accessory Qualifications. Fitting in the space. Aesthetic. Portability. Body comformity Evaluation of the data retrieved from the survey have shown that the principal qualifications are lacking in the consumer furniture while the accessory qualifications have been observed to exist at a certain extend. It has also been observed that the houses are not equipped with enough electrical and communicational outlets. People living in the sampled minimal houses have been asked whether they needed a larger house to live in. The 77% of the responses have shown that the people have the necessity to live in a larger house. The 23% have shown that they don't have such a necessity. In the seventh chapter, the findings of the social research and the survey have been presented. According to those findings it has been concluded that the people did not have any furniture appropriate for the minimal house and minimal house living. It is the finding of this research that their furniture are so heavy and inflexible while they had so little place for storage that people living in the minimal houses can not satisfy most of their requirements. 595 responses of 813 in total have shown that the consumers do not agree that their furniture carry the presumed principal qualifications. On the other 168 of the responses are affirmative somehow that their furniture have those qualifications. 139 responses out of 609 show that the accessory qualifications such as consistency with the space, aesthetic, portability, body comformable are not found in the consumer furnitures. 406 resposes ara affirmative for the existance of those qualifications in the consumer furnitures. XIVIt has been stated thatthese qualifications are neccesary for minimal house furniture in the suggestions section. Additionally it has been expressed that the findings and results of this researh would be useful for each user living in a minimal house, for the product designers, decorators, architects and the students that are educated in the fields of above mentioned disciplines. The questionarrie of the survey, the plans of the sample houses and the passages extracted from the books have been given in the appendixes part. xv
