This dissertation describes an investigation of the functions of the visual system of pigeons. Because the optic nerves of birds almost completely cross, the information from one visual half-field is transmitted to the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, owing to the connections between the hemispheres, the information in one hemisphere is also transmitted to the other hemisphere. However, when both hemispheres access the same stimulus information, a conflict occurs between the hemispheres, and one of the hemispheres determines the motor response. This phenomenon is called metacontrol, and various commissures are responsible for this process. The commissura anterior (CA) is the largest at the forebrain level and connects the structures responsible for motor response. Therefore, the first two experiments investigate the behavioral consequences of the hemispheric interaction and the role of CA in these processes. When pigeons face conflict-inducing stimuli, their motor response is delayed. This result shows that an interaction exists between the hemispheres when the pigeons experience a conflict. However, no population-level asymmetry has been observed; instead, in a small number of pigeons, a single hemisphere played a dominant role in determining the motor output. Asymmetry observed in a small number of pigeons that showed hemispheric dominance disappeared after the CA was severed; however, hemispheric asymmetry appeared in two pigeons that did not exhibit hemispheric asymmetry before the operation. Consequently, metacontrol probably resulted from interhemispheric response conflicts, and the CA plays a limited role in this phenomenon. The mirror image of an object is another source of conflict; therefore, the final experiment evaluated whether pigeons locate hidden food using visual information reflected in a mirror. Because pigeons have panoramic vision, they were tested under both binocular and monocular conditions to prevent a possible false result based on the peripheral visual field. The results showed that the pigeons apparently located the hidden food using the mirror image under the binocular condition. However, half of the pigeons failed to do so under monocular condition. In the final stage of the experiment, when the birds' head movements were examined, it was observed that they did not use the visual information reflected in the mirror but were successful owing to their direct visual contact with the hidden food. Therefore, it is essential to note that mirror-guided behaviors may produce false-positive results in species with panoramic visual fields
