Özet
Beyin kanseri tedavisi ve öngörüsü zor bir kanser türü olarak bilinmektedir. Yan etkilerinin yanında kullanılan tedavilerin de yetersiz olması nedeniyle bireylerin yaşamını ciddi şekilde etkilemektedir. Bu nedenle, doğal ürünlerin bu kanser türü üzerindeki etkisinin araştırılması çok önemlidir. Bu amaçla, bu çalışmada Smilax excelsa bitkisinin yaprakları ile birlikte gövdelerin su ve etanol ekstraktının glioma hücreleri üzerindeki etkisi araştırılmıştır. Ayrıca toplam fenolik ve flavonoid seviyeleri belirlenmiş, DPPH radikal yakalama aktivitesi ölçülerek toplam antioksidan aktivite tayini yapılmıştır. MTT testi ile glioma hücreleri üzerindeki sitotoksik etki de belirlenmiştir. Sonuçlar, bu bitkinin ekstraktının zengin bir antioksidan içeriğe sahip olduğunu ve glioma hücrelerinin önemli bir sitotoksik etkisini uyguladığını göstermiştir. Çalışma sonunda elde edilen, Smilax excelsa'nın beyin kanseri tedavisi için iyi bir aday olabileceğini göstermektedir.

Brain cancer is confirmed to be hard to be cured and patients are poorly prognosed. It has severe influence on the life of individuals due to the insufficiency of the treatments used in addition to their side effects. Thus, investigating the effect of natural products on this type of cancer is crucial. For this purpose, the impact of the water and ethanol extract of the stems in combination with leaves of Smilax excelsa plant on glioma cells was investigated in this study. The total phenolic levels were measured in addition, the total antioxidant activity by DPPH radical scavenging assay and the cytotoxic impact on glioma cells via MTT assay were also determined. The results showed that the water and ethanol extracts of this plant has a rich total phenolic and antioxidant content and exerts a significant cytotoxic effect against C6 glioblastoma cell line by having the water extract more effective. These findings suggest that the water extract of the mixture of stems and leaves of Smilax excelsa is a good candidate for the treatment of glioblastoma multiform.
