IV ABSTRACT Reinforced Earth having 30 year past in geotechnical engineering is a relatively new specific term although the models of soil stabilisation have been existed in the history of human civilisation. The basic principles of soil stabilisation are to increase the bearing capacity of soil mass, reduce the settlements/deformations and improve the stability. With the introduction of the Reinforced Earth system; design procedures, considerations and assumptions have been improved on the principle of resisting the lateral earth pressures by the reinforcement materials having certain tensile strength by means of installing inside the retained soil mass. Developed design and construction techniques have provided the various type of reinforcement (metallic strip, rod, bar, mesh and geosynthetic strip and sheet reinforcing) to carry the lateral pressures by friction resistance developing on the interface between the reinforcement and soil mass. Spreading of the usage of geosynthetic reinforcement materials in reinforced earth systems have presented fast, simple, soft and economic solutions to the area of geotechnical engineering. Nowadays retaining walls reinforced with high strength geotextiles and geogrids are preferable construction systems since their technical advantages and lower construction costs compared to the conventional massive retaining structures. In this study, geosynthetic reinforced retaining wall structures are tried to be introduced with improving design procedures, assumptions and considerations based on the concept of soil reinforcement. In addition, design and constructionprocesses and certain techniques with the worked examples of geotextile and geogrid reinforced earth walls are presented with important geosynthetic reinforcement applications in Turkey. A cost comparison study on geogrid reinforced earth wall and reinforced concrete retaining wall is presented in Appendix. The evaluation of the cost analysis results indicates that, the geosynthetic reinforcement is a fairly economic solution for certain conditions and requirements beside its technical advantages.
