Traffic congestions are essential issues for particularly bigger and loaded cities and the conventional traffic control systems cannot overcome these ever-growing traffic congestions. Hence, the older systems are being replaced with real-time intelligent traffic control systems. These adaptive control systems can collect real-time data through varied sensor inputs, optimize traffic flow and increase the overall system efficiency. These intelligent control systems are applied through master controllers such as microchips or PLC modules. This dissertation covers the entire process of designing a PLC based intelligent traffic control system and implementing the system on hardware for a four-way intersection with two lanes for each road. Firstly, it introduces some background information about the older and conventional traffic control systems and explains the deficiencies of these systems. Then, it illustrates the importance of the PLC-based intelligent traffic control systems by comparing with the older systems and demonstrating the benefits of the latter. Later, it shows the aim of the project clearly and breaks the major objectives down to smaller tasks. Next, it provides detailed information about the PLC modules, presenting the general structure, function of each component, different programming languages as well as the advantages of the PLC controlled systems. Furthermore, it presents a study of the previous studies that have been made about smart traffic control systems, discussing the different applications, depicting the advantages and disadvantages of these methods. Moreover, it demonstrates the development of the software and the hardware sections of the intelligent traffic control system, explaining each step one by one with details. Finally, the dissertation provides an overview of the project and through discussion, giving suggestions for further study and possible improvements.
