This study firstly examines how belief in afterlife and self-transcendence as two transcending ways associate with Schwartz`s (1992) value concept. It is found that believers appreciated tradition and conformity considerably more; security, benevolence and power slightly more than non-believers. Whereas non-believers appreciated hedonism and self-direction slightly more than believers, spiritual but non-religious appreciated universalism slightly more than believers. This study secondly asks how people vary on using Schnell`s (2009) self-transcendence subscales. These subscales consist of vertical (transcending of physical reality such as explicit religiosity, spirituality) horizontal (taking responsibility on behalf of humanity such as generativity) transcendence ways. Also, we added another spirituality aspect which does not have religious content to observe the difference between spiritual but non-religious and believers. It is found that both believer and spiritual but non-religious people use vertical and horizontal ways together; but SBNR people did not attach importance to the religious way of vertical transcendence as much as believers did, and non-believers accentuated only horizontal aspect of self-transcendence. Finally, all of the transcendence ways including Schwartz`s universalism and benevolence value types, and specifically spirituality and meaning in life values were compared with each other. It was discussed that the search for meaning of life might be a possible and broader category which includes vertical and horizontal self-transcendence concepts altogether.
