116 Vllf ABSTRACT In our dissertation, studying on the novel,“Tobacco”written by Dimitir Dimov in 1951, one of the most important representatives of the socialist-realist trend in the contemporary Bulgarian literature, we have tried to analyze the art of narration of this work. In his novel, known as his most important work and translated into many languages, Dimov has touched upon the Bulgarian society and the lives of capital owners beginning from pre- World War II, has reflected the lives of workers and laborers who were trying to live under different conditions in the same period. The novel, when the conditions of the period are taken into account, tries to analyze the degenerated and distorted Bulgarian society with all its corrupted aspects. The narration focuses on the relations of the people exploiting and exploited. The novel renders the values, happiness, sadness, affection and life expectations of different social classes living within the same society by deeply going into the psychological description of the figures. Dimov has put his preference in favor of the worker-revolutionary class while picturing the conflict between classes and has tried to render the figures he selected as devoted and perfect heroes. This work is, at the same time, a panorama of the period in terms of historical and social aspects. When analyzed from a historical perspective, the novel is like a documentary on the state of Bulgaria in the pre and post war period, the effects of the war on the country, information and clues pertaining to the economic and cultural structure of the country and the impacts of war on people and the society etc. The characterization and psychological analysis of figures is of great importance in the literal creativity of Dimitir Dimov.“Boris”and“Irina”in the novel117“Tobacco”which is the subject of the dissertation are the characters ensuring the flow of events. Irina as a woman from the public, envisages to lose everything that sets up her personality to join the high society and lead a top-level life. Boris is an ambitious, determined and cruel businessman who devotes himself and his life to tobacco and who is trying to be a wealthy and powerful man. Both figures adopt different personalities to reach to the place in their lives and ideals. Irina turns out to be a woman attaching importance to only money and her benefits. She seizes to be involved- in social and moral values after a certain point. Boris passes his days pleasantly within the aura of power and wealth. Indeed, the said situation is a tragedy for both figures. Another characteristic in the novel is that both the physical and mental contrasts of the important figures in the novel are given. Boris's brother Pavel and Irina' s friend Lila exhibit totally different characteristics from the said main figures. By this narration, the author includes the reader in the novel and leaves the last word to the reader to make his preference. Dimov, while analyzing the reality within the socialist-realist style, uses the romantic style particularly when the personal tragedies of figures are described and doing so, has been the leader of an important novelty for the Bulgarian literature. We have primarily focused on the life and works of the author in this dissertation. While doing so, we tried to render the old and new studies on Dimov' s creativity emphasizing the role and importance of the author in the Bulgarian literature. We have given brief historical information to clarify the conditions of the period and environment in summary of the novel, focusing on the role and importance of the novel“Tobacco”in author's literal creativity. After the examination of the118 which are important in the setting of the novel and the analysis of the figures, we tried to identify the personal thought of the author reflected in his work. Using the scientific methods for analyzing the style-narration technique which we deemed important in terms of explaining the artistic characteristics of the author, we tried to define the language use and narration of the author through examples. In our dissertation, we aim at giving a general information on the Bulgarian Literature and Dimitir Dimov which the Turkish readership is not familiar with. We observed in our studies that there is no research on Dimitir Dimov and his works in Turkey. Up to now, very few works on Bulgarian literature have been published. These works have been translated into Turkish not from the original, but from the Western languages. The most important of these works is the“Yellow World”or“Tobacco”with its well-known name. We hope that, with this study we shall be able to fill a gap to some extent.
