Özet
Bu çalışmanın amacı dinleme ve yazma bölümlerini içeren Global Yerleştirme Testi (GYT) üzerine yoğunlaşmaktır. Çalışma süreci konuşma testi eklenmesinin GYTnin güvenirliğini artırıp artırmayacağı üzerine yoğunlaşmıştır. Çalışmada bir üniversitenin İngilizce Hazırlık Okulu'nda öğrenim gören 30 İngilizce dil öğrencisi ile çalışılmıştır. Çalışma sonuçları ortaya koymuştur ki çalışmada incelenen dinleme, yazma ve konuşma becerileri testleri arasında bir bağ olduğu halde yalnız başına dinleme ve yazma testlerini kullanarak öğrencinin konuşma becerisinin saptanmasının güvenilir bir şekilde yapılamamıştır. Aynı zamanda bu çalışma grubu ekseninde konuşma testinin eklenmesinin öğrencinin dil seviyesinin belirlenmesine ek bir katkısının olmadığı belirlenmiştir.

This study attempted to focus on the Global Placement Test (GPT) which comprises two components: the written component - Written placement test (WPT) and the listening component (LPT). Throughout this study, it was aimed at investigating whether a spoken component is necessary for increasing the accuracy of the Global Placement Test. The following research questions were posed: 1a) Is there a relationship between the WPT, LPT, and the Test of Spoken English (TSE)? b) Can the scores of the TSE be regressed based on the WPT or LPT? 2) In the presence of WPT and LPT, can the accuracy of the GPT be increased through adding a speaking test to it? These questions were answered by administering the WPT, LPT, and TSE to 30 students who study English as a foreign language, and through analyzing their scores. It was found out that although there is a strong relationship between the three components, regressing the students' oral performance based on the written or listening tests is not an accurate measure to assess their speaking ability. It was also found that in the context of the English Preparatory School, where the study took place, the addition of the speaking test to the current test battery adds nothing unique to the prediction of the language level of the students.
