Özet
Contracts and their effects on behaviors have been one of the most researched topics in the literature from psychology to economics, particularly since the development of transaction cost theory and popularity of incomplete contracts. Today, the role of contracts is not only specifying responsibilities of each party or protecting exchange hazards, but they also provoke (sometimes unpredictable) actions by conveying messages regarding beliefs of partners. Correspondingly, they are used as a relationship management tool. In the current work, this topic is extended to behavioral economics by applying framing phenomenon of prospect theory. More precisely, for analyzing the stimulated employee behaviors and their performance, monetary equivalent employee contracts are represented as a bonus or penalty as well as the combination of them. Although rational individuals could not be deceived by different representations of a specific alternative as claimed by classical theories of economics, compared with equivalent bonus arrangements, penalty contracts are confirmed and accepted as a performance-enhancing tool thanks to the loss aversion, though it is not free of the problems. Furthermore, in contrast to this reality, bonus payment schemes are still preferred to penalty deals in practice, both by employees and employers.
