Özet

Self acts as a cognitive structure which is represented in two orders. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show impairments on the second-order representation of self that is about the known information. The aim of this study was to explore the“absent-self”theory that underlies the self-awareness impairment in ASD. Information that is related to self has an advantage over other-related information. We expected this self-bias (self-reference effect; SRE) to be negatively correlated with ASD traits in explicit tasks and no relation in implicit tasks. We conducted two experiments by using explicit and implicit SRE tasks, AQ and TAS questionnaires. In the first experiment on 180 (Mage = 21.3) neurotypical (NT) adults we could not find the expected result. Size of the self-bias only differed on the interaction between person (self / other), task (implicit / explicit) and trait type (physiological / psychological). For the second experiment, to have a more reliable result, we compared the self-bias on 22 ASD adults (Mage = 36.17) with 19 matched NT adults (Mage = 37.85). Size of the self-bias, again, differed on the interaction between person, level and task, however group difference did not have an impact on the interaction. These insignificant results could be caused by insufficient number of participants, or developmental aspect. Neurobiological causes also should be considered on self-bias in ASD.
