Özet
SUMMARY The growing number of cities after 1950 caused a sub-branch called“urban ge ography”to develop under the anthropological geography discipline. This study deals with the urban geographical properties of“Uşak”and factors that influence these properties. The study is based on sample research done beforehand on the urban geography of different cities. The city Uşak is located in the west of Turkey, in the Aegean region towards the interior Western Anatolia and the first settlement in Uşak is estimated to have begun in around 4000 B.C. The city was referred to as“Uşşak”in ancient docu ments. The location of Uşak as well as its natural surroundings made it an ec onomic, cultural and administrative center throughout its history. During the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey period, Uşak had been a town of Kütahya until 1953. It was made a province with a law passed on July 15, 1953. Uşak is mostly an industrial and commercial centre. The industry is divided into two main sectors: textile and leather manufacturing. The textile industry which also has quite a long history, includes cotton weaving, synthetic and acrylic cotton thread manufacturing, production of machine-made carpets, rugs and blan kets and dying processes. According to the first industrial enumeration in 1913, in the Ottoman Empire period it was found that three of 1 3 manufacturers, which deal with woll thread manufacturing and woll weaving all over the country, were located in Uşak.This is a significant indication of the importance of this industrial sector in Uşak. The existing Sugar factory which was built in 1923, is the first factory of the Pe- publican Period. With the high performance shown in Uşak, it became the focus of interest of both local and foreign companies and individual traders as a result of which it showed much success and became the first Anatolian city to have electricity after Selonica. Again almost at the same time Uşak, with its achievements in com mercial life as well, was also the second city to meet railways in 1896 after the city of Aydın. With its two big organized industrial areas textile and leather manufacturing, Uşak will have its deserved place in industrial and commercial life of our country as a result of these large investments and after the completion of a small in dustrial area which covers 423 workshops. Uşak sets a distinguished example with its successes both in industrial and commercial areas by private sector. Being an economic and cultural province, it is still continuing its development in a balanced way. If this is maintained Uşak will be one of the distinguished industrial, com mercial and cultural city in the future. Nurettin BİLGEN 1999, Istanbul -XV-
