Özet
Rachel Whiteread yapıtları üzerine olan bu araştırma konusu, genelden özele doğru bir çalışma disiplini içeresinde ele alınmaktadır. Tez başlığı kendi içinde bölünerek alt başlıklar dahilinde incelenmektedir. Yalnızca Whiteread yapıtlarına bağlı kalmak demek araştırma konusunu daraltmak demektir. Bu başlığa geniş çerçevede bakabilmek hem Whiteread'in yapıtlarını daha iyi anlamamıza kolaylık sağlayacak hem de kendi üretimlerimin çıkış noktası daha iyi aktarılmış olacaktır. Bu tez çalışması altı ana başlıktan oluşmaktadır. Bu başlıklar kendi içinde alt başlıklar geliştirmektedir. Yedinci başlıkta ise bir heykeltıraş olarak konu bağlamında kendi üretimlerime yer verilmiştir. Birinci ana başlıkta;“Giriş”ile başlayıp bu tez başlığının neden seçilmiş olduğu ve bu doğrultuda araştırma yapmaya yön veren etmenler üzerine bazı bilgiler verilmiştir. Bu bilgilerin verilme sebebi seçilen araştırma konusunun sanatçı ile tez-eser metni arasındaki diyalektik ilişkiyi kurabilmektir. İkinci ana başlıkta;“Ev – Kavram ve İmge”üzerine bazı bilgiler verilmiştir. Bu bilgiler tez okuması süresince sık sık karşılaşılacak kelimeler olduğu için kısaca tanımlarına yer verilmiştir. Bu tanımlar bilimsel olarak sunulmuştur. Üçüncü ana başlıkta;“Değişen – Dönüşen Ev Yapısı”nın tarihsel anlatımı mevcuttur. İnsanlık tarihinde barınma arzusunun ilk ortaya çıkışından bu yana meydana gelen barınak / mekân / ev yapısı üzerine yapılan incelemelerin sonucu yer almaktadır. Bu incelemeler esnasında tarihte bilinen ilk mağaralardan olan Fransa'da Lascaux, İspanya'da Altamira ve İstanbul'daki Yarımburgaz Mağarası'ndan, ilk yerleşim kenti olarak bilinen Çatalhöyük'e beraberinde değişmeye başlayan barınma mekânlarının yapıları ele alınmaktadır. Bu bağlamda evin geçmişten bugüne nasıl bir biçimde şekillenip, değişip dönüştüğü aktarılmıştır. Dördüncü ana başlıkta;“Ev Anlatır”kısmında Gaston Bachelard'ın“…yaşam güzel başlar; evin kucağında kapalı, korunmuş, ılık mı ılık”sözüyle bireyin doğduğu andan itibaren ev mekânıyla kurduğu ilişkiden başlayarak ev mefhumunu geniş çerçevede incelemektedir. Evin birey üzerindeki psikolojik yansımalarına, evin ne ifade ettiği üzerine düşünürlerin çeşitli savları ve sosyo – kültürel bağlamda ev mekânının yeri incelenmektedir. Bu inceleme yapılırken Theodor Adorno'un insanı ev ile evi de dünyayla özdeş kılan yaklaşımından, Martin Heidegger'in“varoluş”(Dasein) kavramından yola çıkarak insanın varlığını kendini bir yere ait hissetme, bir yuva arayışıyla ilişkilendirmesinden, Bachelard'ın evi, düşlenen yer olarak ifade etmesi, düşlerin ve düşlemenin mekânı olarak evi tasvir etmesinden… ve daha birçok düşünürün, yazarın, yönetmenin, şairin ev mefhumu üzerine olan söylemlerine değinilmiştir. Bu noktada ev kavramının her yönden farklı bir biçimde ele alınmasına dikkat çekilmiştir. Bu durum beraberinde evin sanat nesnesi olarak kullanılmaya başladığı andan itibaren çok çeşitli oluşunun izahına da yer vermiştir. Beşinci ana başlıkta;“20. Yüzyıl Heykel Bağlamında Ev İmgesini Yorumlayan Sanatçılar: Do Ho Suh, Louise Bourgeois”üzerinden ev imgesi ele alınmaktadır. Sanatın her alanında ev kavramı işlenmiş olup bu bölümde heykel özelinde bir inceleme yapılmıştır. Tarihsel bir süreç içerisinde yapılan bu inceleme ev mekânının heykel sanatındaki yeri, önemi, ele alış biçimi, hakkında bilgi vermektedir. Bu örneklendirmeleri yaparken ev imgesi üzerine çalışan, Do Ho Suh ve Louise Bourgeois'ın yapıtlarına değinilecektir. Altıncı ana başlıkta;“Rachel Whiteread Yapıtlarında Nesne ve Ev İmgesi”üzerine yapılan araştırmalar ve yorumlar mevcuttur. Bu kısımda Whiteread'in hayatından kısaca bilgi verilmiş, sonrasında sanat pratiği ve yapıtları üzerine değerlendirmeler yapılmıştır. Whiteread'in ev ve eve dair nesneler üzerine ortaya koyduğu sayısız eser mevcuttur. Günümüz önemli sanatçılarından biri olan Whiteread, gerçekte dışa ait olan yapıyı ele almak yerine içteki boşluğa ait alanı kütle şeklinde meydana çıkarma çabasındadır. Bu çalışma tekniği oldukça ilgi çekicidir. Ortaya çıkan yapıt gerçekte var olan yapıtın negatif halini izleyiciye sunmaktadır. Kısacası bu bölüm Whiteread hakkında geniş bir incelemeye yer vermektedir. Bu tez çalışmasının yedinci ve son bölümünde; belirlenen araştırma konusu ve yapıtlarım arasındaki bağlamın yer aldığı bir bölümdür. Disiplinlerarası üretimlerimin içeriği, bağlamı ve malzemesi ile olan ilişkisi bu kısımda ele alınmıştır.

This research on Rachel Whiteread's works is approached through a methodological discipline that moves from the general to the specific. The thesis title is divided and examined through various subheadings. Limiting the study exclusively to Whiteread's works would narrow the scope of the research. Adopting a broader perspective on this topic will not only facilitate a deeper understanding of Whiteread's works but also more effectively convey the point of departure for my own artistic productions. This thesis consists of six main chapters, each of which develops its own subheadings. In the seventh chapter, as a sculptor, I include my own works within the context of the subject matter. The first main chapter, titled“Introduction,”provides information on why this thesis topic was chosen and the factors that directed the research in this direction. The purpose of presenting this information is to establish a dialectical relationship between the selected research topic, the artist, and the thesis-text. The second main chapter provides information on the concept and image of“Home.”Since these terms will frequently appear throughout the thesis, brief definitions are included. These definitions are presented in a scientific manner. The third main chapter provides a historical account of the“Changing and Transforming Structure of the Home.”It presents the findings from studies on the structure of shelter/space/home since the initial emergence of the human desire for shelter. These studies examine the earliest known caves, such as Lascaux in France, Altamira in Spain, and Yarımburgaz Cave in Istanbul, as well as the changing structures of sheltering spaces, including Çatalhöyük, known as one of the first urban settlements. In this context, how the home has been shaped, altered, and transformed from the past to the present is discussed. The fourth main chapter, titled“The House Speaks,”begins with Gaston Bachelard's words,“…life begins beautifully; closed, protected, and warmly cradled in the house,”and examines the concept of the home in a broader context, starting from the individual's relationship with the home space from the moment of birth. It explores the psychological reflections of the home on the individual, various philosophers' views on what the home represents, and the socio-cultural significance of the home space. This exploration touches upon Theodor Adorno's approach, which equates the human with the home and the home with the world, and Martin Heidegger's concept of“being”(Dasein), linking human existence to the search for belonging and a sense of home. It also discusses Bachelard's view of the home as an imagined place, the space of dreams and dreaming, along with many other thinkers, writers, directors, and poets' discourses on the concept of home. At this point, attention is drawn to the different ways in which the concept of home can be approached from various angles. This, in turn, provides an explanation of the diverse forms the home has taken since it began to be used as an artistic object. The fifth main chapter examines the image of the home through the works of artists who interpret it in the context of 20th-century sculpture, specifically Do Ho Suh and Louise Bourgeois. While the concept of home has been explored in various branches of art, this section focuses on its examination within the realm of sculpture. This historical analysis provides information on the role, significance, and approaches to the home space in sculpture, as well as its earliest examples. In doing so, the works of Do Ho Suh and Louise Bourgeois, who have explored the image of the home, are discussed. The sixth main chapter includes research and interpretations on“Object and Home Image in Rachel Whiteread's Works.”This section briefly provides information about Whiteread's life, followed by evaluations of her artistic practice and works. Whiteread has produced numerous pieces related to the home and home-related objects. As one of today's prominent artists, Whiteread focuses not on the external structure but on revealing the space belonging to the inner void as a mass. This technique is quite intriguing. The resulting work presents the negative form of the actual existing object to the viewer. In summary, this section offers an extensive examination of Whiteread. The seventh and final section of this thesis presents the context between the defined research topic and my works. The content of my interdisciplinary productions, along with their context and relationship with the materials used, is discussed in this part.
