Özet
The mechanical behavior of injection molded Short Fiber Reinforced Polymers is usually investigated by testing specimens extracted from injected plates at different orientations with respect to injection main flow direction. A characteristic layered microstructure through the plate's thickness results from the manufacturing process: fibers preferentially align parallel and perpendicular to the main flow direction in the outer layers (shells) and in the inner layer (core), respectively. This peculiar microstructure hinders the evaluation of local properties of each individual layer, which are highly fibers orientation dependent. Material properties of each layer may largely differ to each other, so the local response to the applied load. This would lead to a stress distribution across the specimen thickness which varies as the fiber orientation does. Moreover, the mechanical properties of each layer could vary independently over cycling load, therefore altering the stress distribution further throughout a fatigue test. Local properties of individual layers together with their stiffness degradation trend are required to model the fatigue behavior of these materials. An experimental study was carried out to understand fatigue behavior of short fiber reinforced polymers using specimens of highly coherent fiber orientation by milling the extracted specimens to preserve only shell layer. Thus, fatigue characterization of each layer and comparison with multilayered specimens became possible. Tensile tests were also performed to support the analysis and discussion of the finding of the fatigue test. Digital image correlation technique was used to monitor the surfaces' displacements and strains of specimens throughout testing duration, and further support and verify experimental observations.
