Özet

The main aim of this study is to investigate whether trade openness has a positive effect on economic growth in the Turkish economy. In the study, global trends in the world economy and the transformation of the Turkish economy experienced after the 1980s are summarised. Then, the causality between economic growth and trade openness is examined using Johansen (1988) and Johansen and Juselius (1990) cointegration analysis with annual frequency data for 1980-2019. The data are obtained from the WB database. The results show that there is a cointegration vector between trade openness and economic growth. In other words, there is a long-run causal relationship between both variables. A VECM is created to analyse the short and long-run adjustment process. We find a negative and statistically significant coefficient of the error correction term. This indicates that the economic growth rate is corrected by changing trade openness. In addition to these, we use the Granger causality test to determine the direction of short-run causality between the variables.
