Sikhism as a religion was founded by Guru Nanak in the 16th century, followed by a succession of nine Gurus. The last guru, Gobind Singh, who is known for carrying out many structural and ideological reforms in the Sikh tradition, designated the Sikh holy book Guru Granth Sahib, which he described as the“living guru”, as the religious authority for the Sikh community. On the other hand, he established the Khalsa organization, through which he tried to build Sikh social identity on the idea of political sovereignty. As a result of the Khalsa's efforts, a Sikh Empire was established in the late 18th century that would last for half a century. After the experience of this empire, which did not last long, the Sikhs had no power to establish a state. Still, they made various attempts in line with the idea of political independence that constitutes the essence of the Khalsa. The 1984 Sikh uprising, suppressed by the Indian government through Operation Blue Star, was the most important of these. However, this uprising revived the idea of Khalistan state for Sikhs, both living in the diaspora and Indian Subcontinent, and started to be brought up in the international arena. This study aims to examine the theo-political role of Sikhism in Sikh communities. The focal point of the study are the Sikh communities living in the birthplace of Sikhism, the Indian Subcontinent countries of India and Pakistan, as well as in the diasporas of the United Kingdom and Canada. The period that the study will examine is limited to the span between“Operation Blue Star 1984”and“2020 Khalistan Referendum”. For the study, the historical and religious background of Sikhism will be presented to show the roots of Sikh social identity and theo-political thought. The main focus of the study will be on the social and theo-political analysis of Sikh communities in the modern period. In this regard, it will trace the changes in Sikh communal identity with the diasporic experience, the status and concept of tradition in the shadow of modernization and secularism, and analyze the history of the political and religious struggle for a separate land.
