Chaetocnema Stephens, 1831 is a cosmopolitan genus and includes about 500 species distributed throughout the world. The genus Chaetocnema is represented by a total of 27 species in Turkey, which is located in the Palearctic region. In this study, 13 of these 27 species, in other words, approximately half of the species constituting the Turkish Chaetocnema fauna, were collected from various provinces of Turkey (Ankara, Balıkesir, Mersin, Çankırı, Kayseri, Konya, Samsun and Yozgat) between 1978 and 2018 and were evaluated and analyzed in detail with both stereo microscopic and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies on the basis of male (aedeagus) and female (spermatheca) genital morphologies. In this study, scanning electron microscope (SEM) images obtained for the first time in the world made it possible to detect new distinctive diagnostic characters that have not been previously described in the aedeagus and spermatheca structures. Among these characters, the tooth structures at the tip (apex) of the aedeagus, the morphology of the median and lateral grooves, the dorsal plate structure, the density of sensilla and the rate of chitinization of aedeagus, the thickened integument structure of the spermathecal pump, the junction points of the reseptaculum and spermathecal duct and the rate of chitinization of spermatheca are important. As a result, adeagal characters at species level and spermathecal morphology at higher categories level were found to be more usable in taxonomic analyses of the Chaetocnema genus. The obtained results showed that especially spermathecal structures have distinct and characteristic differences and similarities in morphological terms among subgenera. Therefore, while male genital (aedeagus) morphology provides high descriptiveness at species level in the Chaetocnema genus, female genital (spermatheca) morphology was found to have critical taxonomic importance especially in subgeneric classifications. The findings and results obtained in the study strongly support the subgeneric arrangement of the Chaetocnema genus proposed by Özdikmen (2021). Accordingly, the studied species were divided into five subgenera based on spermathecal character similarities and differences, which proves that the Chaetocnema genus is not monophyletic but polyphyletic in taxonomic terms.
