Turkey is a country located in a high-risk seismic zone. Due to its geographical location, Turkey is situated on active tectonic plate boundaries and is located in a region where different plates collide. Therefore, Turkey experiences earthquake disasters at regular intervals. Turkey is notable for the significant earthquakes recorded in the 20th century. Historical earthquakes such as the 1939 Erzincan earthquake and the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake highlight Turkey's seismicity and repeatedly demonstrate how important earthquakes are as a disaster for the country and the need for preventive measures. The recent major earthquake, the Kahramanmaraş earthquake on February 6, 2023, brought the issue of earthquakes to mind again and exposed our deficiencies in this regard. The earthquakes we experience indicate that structural elements are damaged, and many structures are collepsed totally or partially. As a result of these collapses, many people died and many people are affected financially and emotionally. Vital activities in many cities come to a halt. In Turkey, earthquake regulations have been revised a total of 8 times, including in 1947, 1953, 1961, 1968, 1975, 1998, 2007, and the currently valid 2018 regulations. The main reasons for these revisions are to identify the causes of damage after earthquakes and prevent possible damages using the minimum design criteria provided in the regulations. With the Turkish Building Earthquake Code 2018 (TBDY 2018), structures are now specially designed at desired performance levels according to height classes, building usage classes, ground classes and the maximum earthquake intensity that the faults in the region can create and similar certain parameters. The structural elements of hospitals, health centers, communication facilities, district governorships and municipality administration buildings, and first aid and disaster planning stations that need to be immediately operational after an earthquake are limited by TBDY 2018, emphasizing the immediate usability of these buildings after an earthquake. After being correctly designed in accordance with current regulations and with proper workmanship on the construction site, another important issue is to limit the expected damage in the structural elements and minimize or eliminate damage to non-structural elements. Non-structural components do not contribute to the load-bearing system of the structure but are crucial for the functionality of the building. Examples of non-structural elements include fire, heating, cooling, ventilation installations, suspended ceilings, facade elements, mechanical and electrical equipment, etc. Ensuring the continued functionality of these equipment after an earthquake is of great importance for the uninterrupted use of the building. Even if the structural elements do not suffer damage, the non-structural elements can be damaged, rendering many buildings unusable. Therefore, non-structural elements should be given as much importance as structural elements. Design methods for non-structural elements are provided in TBDY 2018 Section 6 and the American Society of Civil Engineers 7-22 Section 13. Certain parameters are taken into account in calculating the seismic forces affecting non-structural elements. In addition to seismic forces, the functionality of the equipment and whether it is located in the basement or roof of the building also affect the seismic forces acting on the equipment. Another challenge is to ensure vibration isolation for the equipment. With the increasing population and developing technology, the need for uninterrupted comfort in buildings such as residential, industrial facilities, hospitals, municipal buildings, etc. in urban environments is increasing day by day. Non-structural members such as mechanical and electrical equipment and installations that are used in buildings in proportion to the increasing need for comfort have started to be used more extensively. In addition, mechanical and electrical equipment with higher capacity is selected to meet the energy demands such as heating-cooling, ventilation, and electrical power in high-rise buildings and public buildings serving a relatively dense population. These high-capacity equipment generate vibrations while operating, and the vibrations they create cause discomfort in the nearby area in terms of vibration and noise where the equipment is located. Furthermore, the vibrations generated by the equipment adversely affect the bearing capacity of the anchors at the points where the equipment is mounted, shortening the service life of the device over time. After determining the seismic forces affecting non-structural elements, various seismic protection equipment is used to secure the structural elements. These equipment vary or specialize based on the need for vibration isolation, the type of non-structural elements, and the methods of support. In this thesis, generators were modeled at different floors of a 5-story reinforced concrete structure using the ETABS software. The generators were modeled with steel cabin spring supports at 4 support points, and time history analyses were conducted to determine the acceleration values affecting the supports. The test results of steel cabin spring supports, which were subjected to testing with three different specimens and displacement results under load, were used in the modeling of the supports. The forces measured in the steel cabin spring supports were determined through the analyses and compared with the forces calculated using the Equivalent Seismic Load Method and Time History Analysis Methods provided in the TBDY-2018 Section 6 and ASCE-7-22 Section 13 in the ETABS software. In this study, the gaps in the bolt region of the support connecting the upper steel plate and the vertical steel plates were neglected during the modeling of the supports. The stiffness coefficient of the spring inside the steel cabin spring support was considered for the vertical stiffness of the support. For the horizontal stiffness of the support, the stiffness of the steel cabin obtained from the relevant tests was used. During the modeling of the steel cabin spring support in the ETABS software, horizontal stiffness values obtained from the tests were used in the x and y directions. The research scope did not include the determination of reduction in the vibration transmission from the machine to the structure as a result of isolation, but focused solely on the seismic behavior of the components resting on a special support member. As a result, it was observed that the floor level at which the generator is located substantially influences the force, displacement, and acceleration affecting the generator device. In most cases dynamic responses increased at upper floors, although in some cases, sudden increases and decreases occur in certain floors due to resonance and higher-mode effects during the seismic loading of the building model. It was observed that the horizontal seismic force calculated according to the TBDY-2018 equivalent seismic load method did not yield accurate results for the non-structural components on the ground floor, and therefore a revision was proposed. Additionally, potential future research topics were proposed. In addition to the analyses, a series of raised floor shake table tests were carried out in Istanbul Technical University, Structural and Earthquake Engineering Laboratory. In the last part of the thesis, details and results these experiments are presented.
