Özet
Bu çalışma, Clara Reeve'in the Old English Baron adlı eserini göstergebilimsel bir perspektiften ele almayı amaçlamaktadır. Eser, gotik edebiyatın erken örneklerinden biri olarak hem korku ve doğaüstü öğeleri hem de dönemin toplumsal ve kültürel değerlerini yansıtan sembolik yapıları içermektedir. Çalışmada, metin içerisindeki karakterler, mekân tasvirleri, olay örgüsü ve tekrar eden motifler Peirce ve Saussure'ün göstergebilimsel kuramları çerçevesinde incelenmiş; bu unsurların anlam üretme süreçlerindeki işlevleri ayrıntılı bir şekilde çözümlemiştir. Özellikle malikane ve orman gibi mekânsal semboller ile hayalet ve gizem temaları, eserdeki gerilim ve belirsizlik duygusunu pekiştirerek okuyucunun algı ve yorumlama süreçlerini doğrudan etkilemektedir. Bunun yanı sıra, karakterlerin eylemleri ve toplumsal rollerinin sembolik analizi, Reeve'in metin aracılığıyla dönemin etik ve kültürel kodlarını aktarma biçimini göstermektedir. Göstergebilimsel dörtgenler aracılığıyla yapılan çözümleme, metindeki sembollerin hem göstergeler arası ilişkilerini hem de okuyucunun metinle kurduğu bilişsel ve duygusal bağları anlamada önemli bir araç olarak işlev görmüştür. Elde edilen bulgular, The Old English Baron'da kullanılan gösterge sistemlerinin yalnızca edebi yapıyı desteklemekle kalmayıp, okuyucunun metni anlamlandırma sürecini yönlendirdiğini göstermektedir. Bu bağlamda çalışma, eserin hem edebi değerine hem de göstergebilimsel anlam üretme süreçlerine ışık tutmakta ve gotik edebiyat araştırmalarına önemli bir katkı sağlamaktadır.

This study aims to examine Clara Reeve's The Old English Baron from a semiotic perspective. As an early example of Gothic literature, the work encompasses both elements of horror and the supernatural, as well as symbolic structures reflecting the social and cultural values of its period. In this study, the characters, spatial descriptions, plot structure, and recurring motifs within the text are analyzed within the framework of Peirce's and Saussure's semiotic theories, and their functions in meaning-making processes are explored in detail. In particular, spatial symbols such as the manor and the forest, alongside themes of ghosts and mystery, reinforce the sense of tension and uncertainty in the narrative, directly influencing the reader's perception and interpretive processes. Furthermore, the symbolic analysis of characters' actions and social roles reveals how Reeve conveys the ethical and cultural codes of her time through the text. The semiotic square is employed as an analytical tool to examine both the interrelations among signs in the text and the cognitive and emotional engagement of the reader with the narrative. The findings indicate that the semiotic systems utilized in The Old English Baron not only support the literary structure but also guide the reader's process of textual interpretation. In this context, the study sheds light on both the literary value of the work and its semiotic mechanisms of meaning production, contributing significantly to Gothic literary studies.
