This study aimed to investigate the effects of probiotic use on gut health, depression, and menopausal symptoms in perimenopausal women, and to evaluate the relationship between these variables and nutritional status and anthropometric measurements. This cross-sectional study was conducted with at least 152 perimenopausal women who agreed to participate. Participants completed a general information and sociodemographic characteristics form via face-to-face interviews; anthropometric measurements were taken by the researcher. The depression scale was used to assess depression levels, the gastrointestinal symptom rating scale was used to determine gastrointestinal symptoms, and a 24-hour food intake record was used to determine nutritional status. The data were analyzed using a statistical software package. A moderately significant positive correlation was found between the perimenopausal depression scale and its cognitive subscale (r=0.652, p<0.001). A moderately significant positive correlation was also found between the perimenopausal depression scale and its sleep subscale (r=0.662, p<0.001). A moderately significant positive correlation was found between the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale and the constipation subscale (r=0.616, p<0.001). A weakly significant positive correlation was found between the Perimenopausal Depression Scale and the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (r=0.335, p<0.001). A strongly significant positive correlation was found between the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale and the indigestion subscale (r=0.769, p<0.001). The findings of the study indicate that perimenopausal women using probiotics experienced lower severity of gastrointestinal symptoms and significantly reduced levels of depression compared to those not using probiotics. Furthermore, some menopausal symptoms were found to be milder in individuals using probiotics. Probiotic use, when evaluated in conjunction with dietary patterns and anthropometric measurements, was found to be associated with positive effects on gut health. In conclusion, it is thought that the use of probiotics during the perimenopausal period can be considered a complementary approach in terms of supporting gut health, reducing depressive symptoms, and alleviating menopausal symptoms.
