Özet
This study aimed to compare the psychological resilience of smoker and non-smoker adolescents of Syrian origin. This cross-sectional, descriptive study reached 287 adolescents. Data were collected by submitting a data collection form and the Brief Psychological Resilience Scale. The participants' age was 15.85±2.87, the mean number of siblings was 5.05±2.30, and the mean age at which they started smoking was 13.30±2.21. 35.2% of the participants were current smokers, 50.9% had more than one smoker in their family, 24.7% started smoking between the ages of 7 and 14, 22.3% had been smoking for 1-3 years, 25.4% consumed 2-29 cigarettes daily, and 11.5% started smoking by following family members as an example. The total Psychological Resilience Scale score average was 18.50±3.42. In terms of the total PRS score average, participants aged 11-16 (18.87±3.50) were found to be statistically significantly higher than participants aged 17-18 (18.02±3.29) (p<0.05). No statistically significant difference was found in the total Psychological Resilience Scale score average based on gender, family structure, income status, and number of siblings (p>0.05). It was found that the total Psychological Resilience Scale score average of smokers (17.58±3.25) was statistically significantly lower than non- smokers (18.75±3.50) (p<0.05). Participants who cited their family as the reason for starting smoking (16.93±3.48) had statistically significantly lower total Psychological Resilience Scale score averages than participants who stated they did not smoke (18.76±3.50) (p<0.05). In conclusion, smoking was common among adolescents, and PRS scores were lower in adolescents who smoked.
