Özet
Bu çalışma, iktisat tarihi ve teknoloji tarihinin sınırında konumlanan Sanayi Devrimi hakkındaki literatürün bu iki disiplin özelinde birincisi lehine büyük bir dengesizlik arz ettiği tespitinden yola çıkmaktadır. Bu bağlamda amaç, hem bu dengesizliğin nedenini anlamak hem de teknoloji tarihinde Sanayi Devriminin kökenlerine dair iktisat tarihinin ufku dışında açıklamalar getirilip getirilemeyeceğini, eğer getirilebilirse bunun nasıl mümkün olduğunu tespit etmektir. Nitekim sonuçta bunun mümkün olduğu görülmüş, teknoloji tarihinin de genel tarihyazımının ufkuna paralel olarak XX. yüzyıl boyunca iktisadi açıklamalardan kültürel açıklamalara yöneldiği görülmüştür: İktisadi açıklamaların bilimsel itibarının yüksek olduğu dönemlerde teknoloji tarihçileri de eldeki probleme bu açıdan yaklaşmış ve iktisat tarihçilerinin tezlerinden yararlanmışlar, ancak kültürel açıklamalar tarih disiplininde saygınlık kazanmaya başladıkça onlar da Sanayi Devriminin kökenlerini açıklamayı amaçlarken buraya yönelerek iktisattan bağımsız ve özgün tezler savunmaya başlamışlardır. Bu çalışma bu anlamda XX yüzyıl tarihyazımı tartışmalarının genel yapıya eklemlenmemiş gibi görülen bir tarih disiplinini de etkilediğini, yüzyılın ikinci yarısında canlanan -genel ismiyle- kültürel tarihin bir yansımasının da teknoloji tarihinde bulunduğunu ortaya koymuş ve hem genel tarihyazımı hem de teknoloji tarihyazımı tartışmalarına katkı sunmayı amaçlamıştır.

This study emerges upon the observation that the literature on the Industrial Revolution, located at the boundary separating the economic history and the history of technology, displays a significant imbalance in favor of the former. In this regard, the aim here is both to understand the rationale behind this imbalance and to determine whether explanations for the origins of the Industrial Revolution can be offered within the framework of the history of technology without overlapping the economic history, and if so, under which circumstances this is possible. Indeed, it has been shown that this is possible, and that the history of technology, parallel to the horizon of the historiography in general, shifted from the economic explanations to the cultural explanations throughout the 20th century: During the periods when the former enjoyed a scientific prestige, technological historians approached the problem of origins through this perspective and drew upon the theses by economic historians; however, as the latter gained respectability within the discipline of history in general, they too became attracted to the cultural explanations, which inspired them to defend original theses independent from economics, to explain the origins of the Industrial Revolution. This study demonstrates that the debates in 20th-century historiography also influenced a subdiscipline of history that usually looked distant from the mainstream, and that the cultural history, generally known as such, which revived in the second half of the century, also covers the history of technology to a certain degree. It, in this way, aims to contribute to both general historiography and historiography of technology debates.
