Özet

Her çocuğun film seyretme deneyimi biriciktir. Bu çerçevede 4, 5, 8, 9 ve 6,5 yaşlarındaki beş katılımcıyla, tez izleme kurulunun onayıyla çocuk seyircilerin yaşlarına uygun olduğu gerekçesiyle seçilen Elemental (2023), The Red Balloon (1956), The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Kid (1921) ve My Neighbor Totoro (1988) filmleri seyredilmiştir.

Every child's experience of watching a film is unique. This experience possesses a singular, process-oriented, porous, and multisensory structure that varies according to the child's individual characteristics, their distinctive childhood, and the context in which they are situated—independent of age or developmental stage. The child spectator is not a passive recipient who merely consumes the film; rather, they are an active subject who engages with the film through their body, imagination, and prior experiences. This dissertation began with a series of questions: What does our body do while watching a film? How is a multisensory experience constructed? Furthermore, what occurs in the encounter between a child and a film? The study aims to phenomenologically reveal how children in Turkey make sense of and interpret the world through films, and to understand the haptic dimensions of their film-viewing experiences. Building upon this haptic experience, an applicable conceptualization and practice of cinema pedagogy has been developed. The multisensory nature of the active and embodied encounter between film and the child spectator is discussed through the concept of“haptic visuality.”Designed as a qualitative case study, the research employs a phenomenological approach to explore the essence of children's film-viewing experiences. Data collection was based on one-on-one interviews with children, participant observation conducted through interactive co-viewing sessions, and semi-structured, open-ended conversations during and after the screenings. Within this framework, five participants aged 4, 5, 8, 9 and 6,5 watched Elemental (2023), The Red Balloon (1956), The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Kid (1921), and My Neighbor Totoro (1988). These films were selected with the approval of the dissertation monitoring committee on the grounds that they were age-appropriate for child spectators. The dataset, enriched through interview observations and field notes, was analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The patterns identified regarding the haptic dimensions of children's film-viewing experiences are as follows: Children watch films through play and in movement. The 6-11 age group tends to construct cause-effect relationships while watching, compare the film-world with real life, reflect upon and interpret the film, and transform it through play—thus constructing a multisensory experience that includes visual, tactile, auditory, spatial, and emotional components. For children aged 4-5, the process of watching a film is inevitably intertwined with play, storytelling, and bodily movement; the film acquires meaning when supported by creative play and multisensory activities after the viewing. At this point, cinema functions as a therapeutic third space where children can express their emotions, everyday difficulties, and desires, as well as a protected transitional space in which they can play within a relationship of trust and move between reality and fiction. Especially when considered alongside adult accompaniment, this space requires a flexible and permeable relational form that supports the child's experience rather than instructing them didactically. The role of the adult co-viewer in children's cinema is not to transmit knowledge, but to accompany the child's experience, offer cues when necessary, and act as a facilitator who enriches the haptic/multisensory viewing experience. Based on these patterns, the proposed applicable cinema pedagogy emphasizes that the process of watching films with children should be non-rigid and non-didactic, semi-structured, play-based, multisensory, sensitive to haptic experience, child-centered, attentive to individual differences, flexible, and highly porous in structure.
