The skeletal remains that constitute the material of this thesis study were obtained from the excavations conducted in Muğla/Mengefe between 2007–2008. Mengefe is located in the province of Muğla, district of Milas, in the village of Ören (Keramos), approximately 3 km south of Belentepe as the crow flies and about 2 km northwest of Hüsamlar Village, within the area of the Karahasan Pass. The aim of the study is to examine skeletally the individuals dated to the Late Geometric, Classical, and Hellenistic Periods in Mengefe (Muğla) from a pathological perspective and to compare the obtained data with other Anatolian societies in order to understand the health structure, socioeconomic status, and living standards of the society. Furthermore, the similarities and differences of the community in question with other Anatolian populations have been identified through comparative analysis. Due to the poor preservation conditions of some of the skeletons, especially in the skull and vertebral regions, detailed examinations could not be carried out. A total of 439 individuals from the Mengefe Late Geometric, Classical, and Hellenistic Population were examined paleopathologically in this study, aiming to shed light on a population that lived in ancient Anatolia. According to the demographic distribution, the community consists of 40 infants (9.11%), 48 children (10.93%), 146 females (33.26%), 203 males (46.24%), and 2 individuals (0.46%) whose age and sex could not be determined. Based on these data, it was determined that 20.04% of the population is composed of infants and children (under 18 years of age), while 79.96% consists of adults. In the Mengefe population, the high proportion of adult individuals (79.5%) suggests that mortality was predominantly concentrated in adulthood. Pathologies observed in the Mengefe Late Geometric, Classical, and Hellenistic communities were examined under three main categories. In terms of communal pathological lesions, they were classified as anomalies occurring due to lifestyle, infectious diseases, and metabolic diseases. The frequency of observing osteophytes in at least one vertebra in the population is 64%. The rate of observing Schmorl's nodes in at least one vertebra is 18.95%. The rhomboid fossa is observed in 7.14% of the total population. The frequency of enthesopathy in female individuals is 10,34%, while in male individuals it is 7.32%. The rate of identified trepanation is 5%. Cranial trauma was observed in 6.12% of the population, and postcranial trauma in 15.14%. The frequency of infectious diseases determined through periostitis in the community is 6,02%. The population was also analyzed in terms of metabolic diseases, with the frequency of cribra orbitalia being 14.29%, porotic hyperostosis 8.28%, and diploë thickening 11.72%. In conclusion, the pathological lesions observed—such as osteoarthritis, Schmorl's nodes, rhomboid fossa, and enthesopathy—may indicate that the Mengefe community engaged in labor-intensive daily life and had an agriculture-based economy. The rarity of findings indicating nutritional deficiency suggests that, compared to other Anatolian communities, the Mengefe population had better nutrition and lived under more hygienic conditions, indicating a peaceful village society.
