Suicide is a popular motif in literature and has already been examined extensively in numerous studies. Suicide in nineteenth-century literature deserves particular attention here, as it is closely connected to the effects of the Industrial Revolution. Because industrialisation intervened in the traditional life of individuals, which had remained intact for several centuries, and transformed it fundamentally within a relatively short period, keeping pace intellectually with the achievements and progress of the new age posed a considerable challenge. Many people were adversely affected by the social consequences of this enormous transformation and were no longer able to continue the life they had been accustomed to. As a result, social misery spread ever more widely throughout society, for the individual, now detached from the old values and from the social structures that had once provided support, was thrust into a struggle for survival in which he became a merciless lone fighter, and consequently developed signs of degeneration in order to endure the suffering this produced. The aim of the naturalist authors was to take up these symptoms of decline in their works and to present them to the public in an unembellished form, so as to raise public awareness of the problems of that era. Drawing on Gerhart Hauptmann's Vor Sonnenaufgang, Arno Holz and Johannes Schlaf's Papa Hamlet and Max Kretzer's Meister Timpe, this study examines the extent to which social change had such profound effects on the lives of the respective protagonists that they saw suicide as their only way out.
