In the contemporary era, responsibility for goods in transit is one such important area of commercial law having required particular regulation, because the differences in legislation between the port of origin and the destination or on the way would make it difficult to predict liabilities in the case of loss of goods or damage to them. In addition, the nature of the market, when left to mere contract law, is such as to favour the carrier over the consignor, making them able to limit their liability through the contract. The result has been a series of international conventions purporting to regulate different area of international transport of goods. The increasing use of containers and door to door delivery for instance means that units of measurement of the goods, issues around how to determine the facts giving rise to liability, and complexity because of the same goods being transported in several modes such as over land, air, sea, inland waters or railway in the same vessel arise. That is why, the main focus of this dissertation is on the difficulties of certainty and complexity in the current regime in light of multimodal transport.
