Pollination is a critical ecosystem service for the sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems and global food security. In this process, honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) stand out as one of the most ecologically and economically important pollinators, owing to their extensive foraging ranges and polylectic behavioral traits. However, in recent years, severe declines in bee populations and colony losses have been observed globally due to the impact of multiple stress factors such as pesticide exposure, habitat loss, and pathogens. Following the demonstration of the devastating effects of conventional neurotoxic neonicotinoid insecticides on the immune, cognitive, and physiological systems of bees, and the subsequent restriction of their use, there has been an increased shift in agricultural production towards novel butenolide-class systemic insecticides (e.g., Flupyradifurone), which are marketed as“bee-friendly”. Flupyradifurone (FPF), which is reported to exhibit low acute toxicity to honey bees in standard toxicity tests, acts by binding to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the central nervous system, much like neonicotinoids. Independent research demonstrates that chronic exposure to low doses of this compound leads not only to mortality (lethal effects) but also to impairments in vital cognitive and motor functions in bees, such as olfactory and color learning, memory, homing ability, and flight performance. Within the scope of this study, alongside the lethal effects of the aforementioned active ingredient, its sublethal effects on learning, memory, and homing behaviors—which directly determine the interaction of bees with their environment and overall colony productivity—were investigated in detail. It is aimed that the obtained findings will contribute to a better understanding of the factors threatening bee health and provide an up-to-date, scientific database for risk assessment processes regarding environmentally responsible pesticide use.
