Earthquakes are among the most destructive natural hazards affecting human societies and built environments. Within a matter of seconds, a major seismic event can cause extensive structural damage, significant loss of life, disruption of critical infrastructure, and long-term economic consequences. The severity of earthquake impacts is particularly evident in countries located on active tectonic zones, where seismic activity constitutes a continuous threat to urban development and public safety. Türkiye is one of the countries exposed to substantial seismic risk due to its location within the Alpine-Himalayan seismic belt and the presence of several active fault systems, including the North Anatolian Fault Zone and the East Anatolian Fault Zone. Throughout its history, the country has experienced numerous destructive earthquakes that have highlighted the importance of disaster preparedness, risk reduction, and effective emergency response strategies. The earthquakes that occurred on 6 February 2023 in southeastern Türkiye represent one of the most devastating disasters in the country's modern history. The twin earthquakes, with magnitudes of Mw 7.7 and Mw 7.6, caused widespread destruction across a large geographical area and resulted in severe human, social, and economic losses. The extensive damage observed in thousands of buildings revealed the challenges associated with obtaining accurate and timely information during the immediate aftermath of a major disaster. These events demonstrated that rapid identification of collapsed structures is not only a technical requirement but also a critical component of effective disaster management and emergency response operations. Following a destructive earthquake, one of the most urgent tasks is the assessment of building conditions and the identification of structures that have collapsed or suffered severe damage. The availability of accurate information during the first hours after a disaster directly affects the efficiency of search and rescue operations, emergency resource allocation, and decision-making processes. Delays in obtaining reliable situational information may lead to inefficient deployment of emergency teams and may reduce the effectiveness of life-saving operations. Therefore, the development of systems capable of providing rapid and automated building status information has become increasingly important in both academic research and practical disaster management applications. Conventional post-earthquake damage assessment procedures are generally based on field inspections performed by trained experts. Although these methods can provide detailed and reliable evaluations, they often require considerable time, manpower, and logistical support. In large-scale disasters, damaged transportation networks, communication interruptions, and environmental conditions may further complicate assessment activities. Consequently, obtaining comprehensive information regarding affected structures may take several days or even weeks. Such delays may limit the effectiveness of emergency response operations during the most critical period immediately following a disaster. In recent years, technological developments have introduced alternative approaches for damage assessment and disaster monitoring. Remote sensing technologies, satellite imagery, unmanned aerial vehicles, and Geographic Information Systems have been increasingly utilized to improve post-disaster situational awareness. These technologies offer valuable capabilities for large-scale assessments and spatial analysis. However, they may still be affected by operational limitations, weather conditions, data processing requirements, technical complexity, and implementation costs. As a result, there remains a need for complementary technologies capable of providing direct, automated, and real-time information from affected structures. This thesis addresses this need by proposing an Internet of Things (IoT)-based model for the automatic detection of collapsed buildings after earthquakes. The proposed model is designed to contribute to disaster management activities by providing rapid information regarding the condition of monitored structures. Rather than performing comprehensive structural evaluations, the system focuses on determining whether a building has potentially collapsed and transmitting this information to a centralized monitoring environment. Such an approach is intended to support emergency management authorities by reducing information gaps and improving response efficiency during the critical post-disaster period. The study first examines the theoretical foundations of earthquakes, including earthquake generation mechanisms, plate tectonics, fault systems, seismic waves, and earthquake-induced structural damage. Furthermore, current damage assessment methods and disaster management practices are reviewed to identify existing challenges and technological opportunities. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of sensor technologies, location-based information systems, communication infrastructures, and IoT applications in modern disaster management frameworks. The proposed model integrates sensing, data processing, communication, and monitoring functions within a unified system architecture. The sensing layer is based on the use of an MPU6050 accelerometer and orientation sensor together with a BMP390 barometric pressure sensor. These sensors are selected due to their low cost, accessibility, and capability to monitor parameters that may indicate structural collapse. The MPU6050 sensor is intended to detect sudden acceleration changes, inclination variations, and orientation shifts, while the BMP390 sensor contributes to the observation of possible vertical displacement patterns through atmospheric pressure measurements. Sensor measurements are processed by an microcontroller operating as the local processing unit of the system. The collected data are evaluated using predefined decision algorithms that compare observed values with reference conditions. Based on the analysis results, the system generates status information regarding the monitored structure. This information is then transmitted to a central server through the communication layer, enabling remote monitoring and management. The proposed architecture consists of four main components: the sensing layer, data processing layer, communication layer, and central monitoring layer. This layered structure supports modularity, scalability, and future system expansion. Data generated by sensor nodes are transferred to a centralized platform where they can be stored, analyzed, and visualized. Each monitoring unit is assigned a unique device identifier, ensuring that incoming data can be associated with a specific building. This feature allows emergency management personnel to identify the location and status of monitored structures quickly and accurately. An important aspect of the proposed model is its integration with Geographic Information Systems. The combination of sensor-generated information and spatial data enables the visualization of potentially collapsed buildings on digital maps. Such integration may significantly improve situational awareness during disaster response operations by providing emergency managers with a clear overview of affected areas. Furthermore, search and rescue teams can be directed toward priority locations based on real-time information, potentially reducing response times and improving operational effectiveness. The study also considers practical implementation issues that may affect system reliability and operational continuity. Sensor deployment strategies are evaluated to ensure that collected data adequately represent building behavior. Appropriate installation locations are proposed to improve measurement accuracy and system performance. Environmental protection requirements are also addressed through the use of protective enclosures designed to safeguard electronic components against dust, moisture, and other external factors. For this purpose, enclosures with IP65 or higher protection ratings are recommended. Another critical consideration is system operation under adverse conditions. Major earthquakes frequently cause disruptions to power and communication infrastructures. Therefore, the proposed model incorporates recommendations regarding backup power solutions and communication continuity mechanisms. These measures aim to improve system availability during emergency situations and increase the likelihood that critical information can still be transmitted when conventional infrastructure is partially damaged. One of the most significant advantages of the proposed approach is its low-cost and scalable architecture. The use of widely available hardware components enables potential implementation across large building inventories without requiring excessive financial investment. Furthermore, the modular design of the system allows adaptation to different building types, settlement patterns, and operational requirements. Such flexibility may facilitate future integration with smart city infrastructures, digital emergency management platforms, and advanced decision-support systems. In conclusion, this thesis presents an IoT-based conceptual model for the detection of collapsed buildings following earthquakes and establishes its theoretical framework within the context of disaster management. By combining sensor technologies, embedded systems, communication networks, location-based information services, and centralized monitoring capabilities, the proposed model seeks to contribute to faster information acquisition and improved emergency response operations. The approach has the potential to support decision-makers, enhance situational awareness, and improve the effectiveness of search and rescue activities in post-earthquake environments. Future research may focus on prototype implementation, field validation studies, advanced communication technologies, and integration with broader smart disaster management ecosystems.
