öz BAŞKENT ÜNİVERSİTESİ İNGİLİZCE HAZIRLIK BÖLÜMÜ TARAFINDAN OKUTULAN ÖZEL AMAÇLI 215 HUKUK İÇİN İNGİLİZCE DERSİNİN OKUMA MATERYALLERİNİN DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ Kanik, Figen Yüksek Lisans, Eğitim Bilimleri Bölümü Tez Yöneticisi: Prof. Dr. Fersun Paykoç Eylül 2002, 287 sayfa Bu çalışmanın amacı Başkent Üniversitesi İngilizce Hazırlık Bölümü tarafından okutulan özel amaçlı 215 Hukuk için İngilizce dersinin okuma materyallerinin etkililiğini değerlendirmektir. Söz konusu materyallerin değerlendirilmesi dokuz ölçüt üzerinden makro ve mikro düzeylerde yapılmıştır. Hem makro hem de mikro düzeylerde kullanılan ölçütler şunlardır: Okuma becerilerinin gelişimi, içeriğin uygunluğu, aktivitelerin seçimi ve sıralanması, okuma yoluyla kelime bilgisinin gelişimi, okuma parçalan ve aktivitelerin düzeyi, yönergelerin açıklığı, farklı öğrenme stillerinin dikkate alınması, öğrenmede öğrenci özerkliğinin gelişimi, fiziksel görünüm. Makro değerlendirme, materyallerin genel olarak değerlendirilmesini amaçlarken mikro değerlendirme, söz konusu materyallerden seçilmiş iki örnek ünitenin, kullanımı sırasındaki etkililiğinin ortaya çıkarılmasını hedeflemektedir. Makro düzeyde yürütülen değerlendirmede kullanılan veri toplama araçları toplam 105 öğrenciye verilen anket, 12 öğrenciyle ve 2 okutmanlaVI yapılan mülakattır. Materyallerden seçilmiş iki örnek ünitenin mikro düzeyde yapılan değerlendirilmesinde ise; aktivite tanımlama formu, gözlem formu ve öğrenci değerlendirme formu, kullanılan veri toplama araçlarıdır. Veri analizi, materyallerin söz konusu birçok ölçüt bakımından etkili olduğunu ortaya çıkarmıştır. Öte yandan, görsel işitsel ve devinişsel öğrenme stillerinin materyallerde dikkate alınmadığım da saptamıştır. Buna ilaveten, materyaller öğrencilerin okuma becerilerinde kendi özerkliklerim geliştirmelerine yardıma olacak fırsatlardan yoksundur. Ayrıca, öğrenciler, özellikle içerik, aktiviteler ve fiziksel görünüm dikkate alındığında, materyallerin tasarımında, öğrencilerin ilgilerinin dikkate alınmadığım düşünmektedirler. Çalışmanın sonuçlarına dayanarak; öğrencilere, kendi öğrenmeleri konusunda sorumluluk almaları için gerekli beceri, strateji ve güveni sağlayacak öğrenci özerkliğini geliştirici unsurların materyallere dahil edilmesi ihtiyacı saptanmıştır. Bununla birlikte, söz konusu eğitim kurumundaki öğrencilerin, okutmanların ve materyal geliştirenlerin öğrenci özerkliğinin geliştirilme» konusunda bilinçlendirilmesinin gerekliliği de ortaya çıkarılmıştır. Buna ek olarak, farklı öğrenme stillerinin materyal tasarım ve değerlendirilmesinde dikkate alınması gerektiği de saptanmıştır. Ayrıca, öğrencilerde merak ve ilgi uyandırmak için onları ihtiyaçları konusunda yeterince bilgilendirmenin gerekliliği de vurgulanmıştır. Kısaca, bu çalışmanın sonuçlarının öğrenciler, okutmanlar ve materyal geliştirenler açısından önemli sonuçlan vardır.

Ill ABSTRACT EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ESP READING MATERIALS FOR 215 ENGLISH FOR LAW COURSE AT THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE SCHOOL OF BAŞKENT UNIVERSITY Kanik, Figen MS., Department of Educational Sciences Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Fersun Paykoç September 2002, 287 pages The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the ESP reading materials developed for 215 English for Law Course given at the English Language School of Başkent University. The evaluation of the materials concerned was conducted at both macro and micro levels on the basis of nine criteria, namely, development of the reading skill, suitability of content, selection and organisation of tasks/activities, development of vocabulary through reading, level of texts and tasks / activities, clarity of instructions, consideration of learning style differences, development of learner autonomy, and physical appearance of the materials. Macro evaluation of the materials aimed to examine the overall effectiveness of the materials whereas the micro evaluation aimed to assess the effectiveness of the two sample units from the materials in action. The data collection instruments used for the macro evaluation of the materials were student questionnaire administered to 105 students, interviews with 12 students and 2 instructors. The instrument used for the microIV evaluation of the two sample units involved task description form,observation tool and student checklist. The data analysis revealed that the materials were effective in relation to most of the criteria. On the other hand, it also indicated that the materials failed to consider learning style preferences of the visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learner. In addition, they missed the opportunities to help learners gain autonomy in the reading skill. What is more, the students seemed to think that student interest was not taken into account in the design of the particular materials especially when the content, tasks/activities and physical appearance of the materials were concerned. On the basis of the results of the study, it is suggested that there is a need to incorporate learner training elements into the materials in order to develop learner autonomy, which will provide learners with the abilities, strategies and confidence to take on responsibility for their own learning. Meanwhile, it is also noted that awareness of the students, instructors and materials developers should be raised to the development of learner autonomy in the particular context. Furthermore, it is also noted that learning style differences should be considered in the design and evaluation of the materials. Moreover, the results also suggested the need to raise the awareness of the learners to their needs in order to arouse interest and curiosity in what is studied. In brief, the findings of the study have implications on learners, instructors, and materials developers.
