202 SUMMARY By Eren, Selim, A Sociological Study of Alevi Community Living in Ordu Region, PhD Thesis, Supervisor: Prof.Dr. Münir Koştaş, PP: VII-203 In this study, the sociological structure of a community known asAlevis in Turkey was studied briefly from a sociological perspective along with a particular in-depth investigation on the lives ofAlevis living in Ordu region. The thesis has three sections. The aim, the importance of the topic, methodology, hypotheses, the methods used for data gathering and were presented in the introduction chapter. And, the nature of different understandings of İslam emerged in the history of Turkish people was surveyed within the process in which Turks converted to Islam. In the first chapter, the concepts of Alevilik and Bektaşilik was defined and the nature of social orientations labelled with these concepts were discussed in general In addition, those folks, traditions and beliefs which were held by Turks before converting to Islam and which have been transferred and preserved within the community of Alevi-Bektasi today were elaborated. In the second chapter, the geographical, social and the demographic nature of city of Ordu, as a research field, was introduced; and religious beliefs and practices as well as folks of Alevi community were described. The characteristics of relations between Alevis and Sunnis both in the past and today were explored and the factors, which may contribute to relations between these two communities positively, were emphasised. It is obvious that many historical,. rejigio us and cultural factors played important roles in the formation ofAlevis and Sunnis. Hence, there are different applications of these two communities both inside and outside of the country. Although there are similarities in many respects in the characteristics of Alevis living in Ordu and Alevis living in other parts of Turkey, there are still noticeable certain differences between these groups. The nature of the coherent relations between Alevi andSunni individuals in Ordu is a clear example of this. To sum up, in order to determine the features of belief and culture of Turkish people field researches should be increased. In this respect, it is hoped that the present research would contribute to a better understanding ofAlevis living in Turkey; and to the identification of their relations with Sunni majority.
