POLYMER ELECTROLYTE MEMBRANE FUEL CELLS- APPLICATIONS ON AUTOMOBILES and PRODUCTION SUMMARY Key words : Fuel Cell, Membrane, Polymer, Solid Electrolyte Fuel cells; as being clean, long-life and flexible to the type of fuel, are energy converters. They convert the chemical energy in a fuel to electric energy directly in high levels. Hydrogen, ethanol, methanol, etc. (renewable fuells), naturel gas, LPG, petroleum, liquid propan and gasified coal (fossil fuels) are used as fuel. Most important advantages of fuel cells are those; they don't cause environmental pollution and high levels of voice, they have stable parts. A fuel cell is made up an anode and cathode electrode and electrolyte between these two parts. In a typical fuel cell; hydrogen supplied from anode side, oxygen/air supplied from cathode side and as a result electric energy, vaporing water and heat occur output. Fuel cells according to the electrolytes used consist of six groups; Alkaline, phosphoric acid, solid oxide, molten carbonate, polymer electrolyte (PEMFC) and direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The electrolytes used in PEMFC and DMFC are similar to each other but different because of the fuel used. Fuel cells are widely used in a cars, space vehicles, sea vehicles, electric and heat supplying centers (they can be used for military purposes). PEMFC and DMFC are used especially in transportation applications more effective and environmental based than classical internal combustion engines. As the technology develops the importance of a clean environment increases and the society needs more effective and environmental based power plants. This shows us that in the future fuel cells are going to be used instead of internal combustion engines. By the way, in order for the system to be competitive especially in automobile applications, cheap parts, easy ways of production, small volume and weight, cheap and confident fuel tanking systems are necessary. Nowadays, lost of trade and research/development centers make studies on this subject. XV
