“A Study on Mahmûd Sâmî Pasha al'Bârûdî: His Life and Works”This dissertation alms at studying the life of Mahmûd Sâmî Pasha, his contributions to literature and his works. He was an eminent Ottoman poet and statesman, who managed to promote to the rank of grand vizier during the reign of Khediv Tevük in Egypt. Mahmûd Sâmî al'Bârûdî is known to be the prominent literary figure who was able to revive the Arabic poetry by virtue of his zeal and talent, following a period of decadance lasting almost five centuries and who established the school of literature named after him. Many poets of the following generations were Influenced and inspired by his mastery of art. He was a distinguished poet who trained himself by learning the poems of the former Arab poets by heart and reciting and imitating their works. Making use of the old materials and adding his own thoughts and feelings to them, he was able to compose new works of art of his own. This study is composed of an Introduction and three Chapters. The Introduction is concerned with the factors affecting the scholarly and literary progress made during the period between the Napoleon's invasion and the British rule in Egypt. This section is followed by an account of development and general features of the art of poetry In Egypt until Bârûdî arrived at maturity. A detailed biography of his was studied in Chapter One In several phases beginning with his childhood, training, military service, engagement with politics and his exile, by referring to his poems. In Chapter Two, the emphasis was given on the scholarly side and the primary characteristics of his art. His place In Arabic poetry, the aspects of the school founded and developed by himself, the poets who were inspired and Influenced by his art, the pseudonyms he used, the quotations the took from the preceding poets and from Koran, the imagery he used and the subject matters he was concerned with were all Included In this chapter. In Chapter Three an extensive Information was given about his works. The first and the most Important one Is his Dlwan on which this study is primarily based. The second one is his 4 volume Selections (Muhtârât) from the works of 30 muvailad poets (those who lived during Abbasid period). The third one titled Kesful-gummeh fl medhi seyyldl'l-ummeh. a panegryric poem of 447 couplets In epic form, composed for the glorification of Prophet Mohammed. It is an Imitative piece of work taking el-Burde by el-Bûsîrî as a model. The fourth and the last one is Kavdu'1-evâbld in ornamented prose with occasional insertion of some couplets.
