ABSTRACT THE INFLUENCE OF THE SCIENTIFIC AND INTELLECTUAL MOVEMENTS IN THE MAKING OF THE HADITH LITERATURE DURING THE CLASSDJICATION PERIOD (In refence to al-Bukhari) We can speak about a number of activities, which played important roles, as part of the service to Islam, in the emergence and developmet of the Hadith literature. Some of these activities we have included in this study under the heading of the scientific and intellectual movements. At the very outset of our research, we have noted that Islam, in combatting against the foreign-based scientific and speculative attacks, devised a strategy and policy by concentratingits efforts to keep Muslims united in their faith and religious practices. Thanks to the conquests and the contributions of the new converts to Islam, Muslims' scientific activities passed from oral to the records in wtitten form, which eventually played a positive role in the formation of the Hadith literary tradition. At the same time, the need for a better competition with the different and foreign cultures, as well as for a healthy formation of Islamic Thought, initiated the process for constructing all the knowledge that had been hitherto accumulated during the classification period. Such process also made it possible the rise of new disciplines in the Muslim world. All the activities concerning the collection of the hadith materials, which had originally started in the second century of the Hijra, paved the way for not only the studies in the field of the Arabic language but also the formation of such important disciplines as Islamic Jurisprudence, Hadith, the Methodology of Islamic Law, Islamic Theology, Qur'anic Exegesis, and so on. All of these sciences made an important contribution to the formation of the Hadith literature, especially in the arrangement of the Hadith materials according to their subject-matters and topics. This kind of scientific and intellectual dynamism that arose in parallel to the changing and developing conditions of the socio-cultural and political milieu of the time, exercised considerable impact on Hadith experts and critics, especially in their new attempts at furthering the study of the various branches of the Hadith disciplines. For Hadith and the people dealing with the Hadith had been the center and even main target of such a milieu. Since the Hadith experts investigated the issues and questions of the time strictly from their own perspectives, the end-result of their efforts was the production of the works examining both the transmission and interpretation of the available hadiths. We have confined our study only to the Sahih al-Bukhari, merely because it was difficult for us to deal with all the Hadith collections and sift them out in such a limited thesis as this. Besides, Imam al-Bukhari has been the pivotal personality of the time of the classification. Hence this is also true of both his time and his scholarly life. Our thesis consists of three major parts, apart from an Introduction which provides information about the importance of the topic, its aim and method, as well as the sources employed during the research. In the First Part, we have tried to determine the phases of the Hadith literature and the time of the classification and and the first classifiers of the Hadith. This prepared the ground for the rest of the thesis. Later by identifying the scientific and intellectual movements which influenced the formation of the Hadith literature, we have shown the areas of their impact in this field. In the Second Part, we have examined at length as to how these movements had been instrumental in the formation and development of the various branches of the Hadith literature. In doing so, we have linked the general accounts provided in the First Part with the specifics of the Hadith literature. In the Third Part, the influence of the scientific and intellectual movements in the formation of the Hadith literature has been studied with concrete examples in reference to the Sahih al-Bukhari. Here proceeding from the subjects of discussion concernin these movements, we have specifically noted the influential factors in the formation and composition of the Sahih al-Bukhari. In conclusion, we have given a general evaluation of the study and suggested some comments, remarks and proposals for further studies.
