VI SUMMARY A novel anorthite (CjaO.Aj203.2Si02) based whiteware was developed: It combines the best features of bone china and hard porcelain such as high degree of whiteness, translucency and high flexural strength. This whiteware can be coated with a high scratch and abrasion resistant glaze. In this body, the clay content has been kept at a lower level of 12 wt.% in order to minimise the anisotrophic shrinkage which arises from clay particle alignment and causes high scrap rates, occurs during both drying ançl firing. The ratio of clay usage hi the production of traditional ceramics usually ranges between 30-60 wtt% and this high level of clay usage provides the desired green strength to the body lor the industrial applications. Because of low clay content, the green strength of anorthite based whiteware remained below the d0Sired levels. In this study it was aimed to improve the green strength behaviour of low clay containing whiteware body by adding appropriate amounts of suitable organic binders. The subject of mis study Is to determine the types of the organic binders and thejr optimum amounts which enhances the green strength behaviour of the body for obtaining the desired shapes and keeping their shapes during other processing stages until sintering. Fo* this aim, different types of commercial organic binders were selected and they were added to the batches. Each batch was cratainiijg different types and amounts of binders. To see the effect of organic binder addition on the green strength behaviour test samples were produced by either slip casting and dry pressing methods. Those samples werç tested by three point bending test. The green strength results that obtained from these samples were compared and suitable types binders and their optimum levels were determined. It was observed that when the binder was added to the body, the processing conditions were changed. However by carrying out further studies the hew conditions were set out fpr eacji processing methods. For example, when the binder was added the viscosity öf slip was increased beyond the level of obtaining successful castings. However, by adding appropriate types and amounts of defiocculant the viscosity was reçlueed to the required levels. The best green strength results in this study were achieved with Duramax Q- 1007 type of binder for both dry pressing and slip casting methods. For industrial applications generally 2-2,5 MPa green strength value is sufficient. For the low clayvıı containing whiteware body this green strength value was achieved by using only 3 wt.% for dry pressing and 4 wt.% for slip casting. These samples were dried at 80°C for at least three hours before testing. The high green strength was controlled by polymer-ceramic powder interactions, as was revealed by FT-Ht study. The effoet of binder addition on the microstructure was also studied by scanning election microscopy.
