Özet

SUMMARY Definition Of Post Exercise Arterial Waveform And Time Relationship İn The Brachial Artery By Color Doppler Ultrasound Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate when reverse diastolic flows reappear after arm exercise in the brachial artery and the influencing factors using Color Doppler Ultrasound (CDUS) and to find out if there is a difference regarding this matter between sedentary individuals and sportsmen. Material and Methods: Incremental exercises were performed by 20 healthy individuals (18-26 years old) consisting of 10 sedentary indiviuals and 10 sportsmen using an arm ergometer. Measurements were done in the distal portion of the right brachial artery using CDUS. Measurements were made before the exercise (BE), as soon as the exercise ended (EE) and at the time when monophasic velocity waveforms reverted back to triphasic forms (TP). The diameter of the brachial artery, peak systolic maximum (Vmax), end diastolic minimum (Vmin) and mean velocities (Vmean), pulsatility indices (PI), velocity waveform patterns, heart rates and the time span required for transformation of the monophasic waveforms by the end of the exercise to triphasic were all individually recorded. Results: No statistically significant difference was found between the groups when triphasic waveform transformation times were compared (p>0.05). After exercise, as compared to BE, increases were noted in Vmax, Vmin, Vmean, heart rate and vessel diameter (p < 0.001). When the reverse diastolic flows reappeared, a decrease in these parameters and an approach to BE state were observed. However in the sportsmen group Vmin, vessel diameter and heart rates were significantly high at TP state when compared to BE state (p< 0.05). No significant difference was present between the groups when all these parameters were compared (p>0.017). In both groups after exercise, a significant decrease in PI was detected (pO.001). A significant increase in PI was noted at TP state in both the sedentary and the sportsmen groups when compared EE state but when compared to BE state there was a significant difference in the sportsmen group (p0.05). No significant differences were noted between the groups at BE, EE and TP states regarding PI (p>0.017). Conclusion: No significant difference was noted in reappearance times of triphasic waveforms in the peripheral conduit arteries of exercise trained individuals without active arm exercise as compared with the sedentary individuals. These indices measured in the brachial artery do not reflect physical conditioning. However high Vmin, brachial artery diameter and heart rate and low PI at TP state as compared to before exercise in sportsmen group suggest that post exercise vascular dilatation and decrease in vascular resistance persist longer in this group. This may point to a subtle vascular adaptation related to systemic exercise.
