ABSTRACT LABORATÜARY USES IN SECAONDARY CHEMISTRY COURSES ACCORDING TO TEACHERS and STUDENTS (Balıkesir Case) Yusuf TURAN Sciences Institute of Balıkesir University Education of OFMA Chemistry Thesis of Bachelor in Science Degree Adviser of Thesis: Assistant Professor Dr. Erol ASKER In recent years the number of studies on education has increased, gradually. This increase indicates the importance given to education. Chemistry takes an important part in science. Laboratory method is one of the most effective methods in teaching chemistry. In laboratory students have opportunities of putting the concepts they learn in the classrooms into practice. This way, the knowledge is supplied more permanently, meaningfully digressing from memorizing. In this study, we applied a Chemistry Laboratory Using and Evaluation Questionnaire to the teachers who are on duty in Balıkesir and 9th, 10th, 11th grade students who are receiving secondary education in Balıkesir, to find out laboratory using frequency, their concerns about chemistry laboratory, and thoughts on laboratory sufficiency and shortages and about experiments. Additionally, some of the students and teachers were interviewed face to face to verify the quantitative data and to have some deeper look at the research subject. In this study we used descriptive shading method supported by interviews. The results suggest that the teachers think laboratory studies have an important place in chemistry teaching, despite the fact that don't practice enough laboratory studies. In addition, there are differences in using laboratory in teaching chemistry among the different types of secondary education schools.
