Özet (Çeviri)
In the Hellenistio period in Western Anatolia, Apollo Smintheus Temple, in Troas region, was important due to its architecture and sculpture many ancient writers, starting from Horaeros and also including Strahb, Pliny, Eusebii and Pamphili- in chronological order - give us the earliest knowledge about this temple and the worshipping. The temple was first discovered“by the 18”11*1 century travellers in 1785 and first excavated and surveyed in 1866. The temple, which has“bean subject of various researches so far, has been excavated systematically from 1980 onwards. And it's since this year that the importance of Apollo Smintheus Temple has ”begun to be realized in the scientific world. Prof.Dr. Coşkun özgünel taking the lead, the excavation team, with their team work, contributes favourably to the scientific knowledge of Western Anatolia architecture in the Hellenistio Period. The terracotta figurines obtained during the 1986 excavations around the temple and the 1989 necropole excavations are cthe only examples of their type coming from the temple.Examined technically, the figurines can be said to have imperfeot mould, to lack elaboration, and to be brittle. Compared with the terracottas from the other Western Anatolian archaeological sites, these terracottas are; really of poorer quality. The facial characteristics of the figurines generally bear resemblance to the characteristics of the Hellenistic period figurine. While the moulding of the forehead is traditional, the moulding of the aye lis closer to the main principles of the period concerning this part of the face «When we examine the other facial details, we can conolude that these details are quite simple and ordinary. As for the coiffures and decorations of the figurine heads, most of them are in the Knidos style, which was typical of the Hellenistic period. They wear some of the various buns of the period. Some heads wear the Lampadion Tie, used for the loose waves at the back of the head, and ties which help to bring the waves together on the top of the head. The heads are adorned with-54 - hair“bands, thin diadems, stephanai ( orescent crowns ) and kerchiefs. To glance at the iconography of these figurines, some reflect the charac teristics of a certain type of figurine which was qui-te popular during the Hellenistic period. The widely produced types of the period are nude seated female often with articulated arms and draped female figüre hearing the same characteristics «There are some doubts ahout whom and what these figurines represent, as wall as interpretations. The said figurines, which generally hear religious purposes, are called ”Hierodouloi ".Some examples from Apollo Smintheus Temple are likely to he put into this type.Another example is represented with the lyre, the symbol of a Muse in Greek Mythology. A draped figurine coming from the temple is a reflection of a prototype which was a large piece of sculpture produced in the Classical period, namely, Venüs Genetrix.Vemis Eenetrix was copied several times in ancient times and was produced widely in several workshops during the Hellenistic period in the form of terracottas. The onl^r example of the terracotta plaque obtained from the necropole, shows a pair that is likely to be- either Eros-P?yche or Dionysos-Ariadne. As for the dating of the findings of the temple and the necropole, while some examples date from the third century B.C., some othersdate from the latest parfc of the first century B.C. and even from the earliest part of the first century A,D.The figurines found among the tomb findings are of a later period than those mentioned before. To oonclude, the figurines and the fragments mentioned above, examined in terms of quality and style, cannot be counted among the best »These figurines resemble those found in the sites nearby to some extent, but they are lower in terms of quality, Talcing the poorer quality of the figüriaes li^o iac5B?T^3c-wej; can put forward two possibilities t They were either imported from aa. olose workshop or produoed by a local workshop reflecting the charac teristics of the other workshop nearby. However, as no workshop has been dis covered around the temple yet, the former suggestion ia more likely.
