-# ABSTRACT This study is an investion into the learning strategies used by beginning and intermediate level students learning English as a foreign language. The study is cross-sectional and the data obtained are descriptive rather than observational. The results of the study are evaluated within the framework of the objectives set out at the beginning of the investigation. The subjects were sixty students in the English Section (TEFL) of the Department of Foreign Languages of Gazi Faculty of Education, Gazi University, Ankara (GES). The learning styles questionnaire was given to the subjects as the initial step. The results of the questionnaire were used in the selection of the students to be interviewed. Thirteen students from each level, totally twenty-six students, were interviewed after class hours in order to obtain more in-depth information about their learning strategies as to the learning tasks specified in the interview guide. The most important findings resulting from this investigation met the objectives of the study. These are: ( 1 ) The range of learning strategies employed by beginning and intermediate level GES students were identified and analyzed; (2) The learning strategies obtained were classified within the existing criterion measure; (3) It was found that certain learning strategies correlated to certain types of learning tasks with high frequency; (4) The results demonstrated that broader range of frequency in metacognitive and cognitive strategy use correlated to greater proficiency of English. - 1 -
