Özet

Bu tez, üniversite yerleşmelerinin tasarımında, `üniversite-kent ilişkisine dikkatçekmeyi, modern mimari ve kentsel tasarım kavramlarının üniversiteplanlamasındaki yeri ve önemini' araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. ?Üniversitetasarımının, Modern mimarinin kentsel deney alanı olarak görüldüğü? tezindenyola çıkarak, II. Dünya savaşı sonrasında gelişen kavramlara paralel, Modernmimarinin etkisinde değişim gösteren üniversite yerleşmelerinin planlama vebiçimleme ilkelerini irdelemektedir.Bu tezin ilk dört bölümü, esas hedefe giden bir altyapı çalışması niteliğindedir.Beşinci bölüm, tezin araştırma alanını oluşturmaktadır. Son iki bölüm ise,bulguların derlenmesi, genel sonuç ve tartışmaları içermektedir.Tezin ana strüktürü şöyle kurulmaktadır:Birinci bölümde üniversite kavramı ve tarihsel gelişimi irdelenmekte, tezin amacı,ana teması, araştırma problemleri, genel stratejisi, yöntem ve strüktürü ortayakoyulmaktadır. Ülkemizde üniversitenin çok kısa bir geçmişi olması ve hatta,Batlılı anlamda henüz bir üniversite geleneğinin oluşmadığı düşünüldüğünden,üniversite kavramının oluşum ve gelişim süreçlerine araştırmanın bu birincibölümünde geniş bir yer ayırılmıştır. Bu bölümde, ayrıca, II. Dünya Savaşısonrasında ortaya çıkan yeni kavramlar ve araştırmada model alınanülkelerdeki farklı kurumsal yaklaşımlar irdelenerek beşinci bölüm için bir altyapıoluşturulmaya çalışılmaktadır.İkinci bölüm, tezin araştırma problemini açıklamaktadır. Üniversite-kentselilişkisinin tarihsel olgular ayıklanarak irdelendiği bu bölümde, bu bağlamındaüniversitelerin çeşitlenmesi ve bir planlama problemi olarak üniversite-kentilişkisinin boyutları ele alınmaktadır.Üçüncü bölüm, tezin bakış açısını ortaya koymaktadır. Bu bölümde, modernmimarinin etkisiyle değişen `yerleşme'nin karakteristik özellikleri ele alınarak,`üniversite'nin, modern bir yerleşme biçimi olarak tanımı yapılmakta, çalışmanınkapsam ve kriterleri belirlenmektedir.Tezin kuramsal altyapısını oluşturan dördüncü bölümde, araştırmanın esas ilgialanı olan, `II. Dünya Savaşı sonrası dönemde modern mimari ve kentsel tasarımkavramlarında meydana gelen temel değişimler' ortaya koyulmaktadır. Bubölümün hedefi beşinci bölüme dayanak oluşturmak ve tezin bakış açısınıderinleştirmektir.Beşinci bölüm, araştırmanın temel başlıklarını ortaya koymaktadır. Bu bölümde,ülkesel eğitim modelleri bazında savaş sonrası dönemin kitlesel üniversiteçözümleri irdelenmekte, üniversite yerleşim örüntülerini etkileyen unsurlar analizedilmektedir.Altıncı bölümde, elde edilen bulgular ve üniversitenin tasarımına yönelik temelkavramlar sunulmaktadır. Bunu yaparken, üniversitenin kentsel örüntüsüneyönelik bulgular tartışmaya açılmakta ve bütüncül bir tasarım yöntemi oluşturmadoğrultusunda kentsel tasarım yöntemlerinin kullanılabilirliği test edilmektedir.Yedinci bölüm, elde edilen sonuçlar üzerine genel bir değerlendirmeiçermektedir. Önceki bölümlerde ortaya koyulan ana başlıklar irdelenmektedir.

To emphasise the essence of the methodology developed in campus designduring the Post-war era through modern architecture and urban design is themajor approach of this research. In this certain period, there has been anenormous amount of knowledge gathered and experience gained as newmodernist universities being built. This period stands still as a great source ofinformation for architects and urban planners to find new methodologiesdeveloped on planning and form-making in university design.The main structure of this research is as follows:The titles in the prevailing four sections aims to prepare a sub-structure for themain focus of this research which is developed in the fifth section. Last twosections comprises the results and discussions on critical themes gatheredthrough analysis.The first section of this research focuses on `the university as an institution asdeveloped through the history?. A brief historical information is given on thedevelopment and evolution of university as an institution, considering that thisinstitution has a short history in our country. Another aim of this section is to focuson the developments and changes in the role and structure of the universityinstitution facing great challanges after the II. World War. This researchespecially focuses on U.S.A., England, Germany and France, since thesecountries has developed unique institutional profiles in the end of the 19thcentury and became role-models for the rest of the world. It is believed that thisapproach will help to analyse the major changes in the architecture of post-war institution in the fifth section. The aim of this research as well as the maintheme, research problems, strategy, method and structure will be discussed inthe first section.The second section includes the problem statement. Through historical analysis,the major changes in the architectural composition of university buildings inaccordance with their urban relations. Respectively, the planning of universitiesin different scales is discussed.The third section, aims to develop a unique approach for the research area aswell as discuss the context and criterias on this approach. While discussing themajor changes in the design of human settlements with Modern Movement inarchitecture, the definition of university campus is taken as a model of urbanarchitecture.The theoretical discussions on `the changing meaning of Post-war Modernismarchitecture and urban design? are the main themes of the fourth section,aiming to prepare a methodolgy for the analysis made in fifth section, as well asto deepen the approach of this research.The fifth section focuses on the main themes of Post-war campus design andcomprises the analysis of the integral urban approaches in respect to newuniversity modernism, besides the design factors effecting the patterns ofcampus layouts.The sixth section comprises the results and discussions on critical themesgathered through analysis on university taken as an urban model. The patternsof growth and flexibilitiy of different approaches are analysed, while urbandesign approaches are being tested.The last section comprises discussions and propositions on the critical themeswhich are put forward. The problems presented, the intended targets and thegeneral methodology of this research are discussed in this final section.
