Duygulu, Sergül., The effects of the transformational leadership (TL) training program on the leadership practices of Unit Charge Nurses (UCN), Hacettepe University Institute of Health Sciences, Ph.D. Thesis in Community Health Nursing Program, Ankara 2007. This study was designed as an evaluative research to investigate the effects of TL training program on UCN leadership practices. Sample was consisted of 30 UCN with BsN degree and their 151 observers at Hacettepe University Hospitals - based on voluntary participation. Data was collected through Nurses Data Sheet, and Leadership Practices Inventory-Self and Observer (LPI, Kouzes and Possner, 2003) applied four times during 14 months study process. LPI?s validity and reliability studies were done for Turkish population at Izmir University Hospitals with similar population. Validity and reliability was established using LISREL 8.54 program. LPI?s Alpha Coefficient was .92 for self and .97 for observer. Theoretical (14 hours) and individual study (14 hours) formed the TL training program. Mean, standard deviation and percentages, Repeated Measures test and Two Factor Analysis were used for analysis. According the LPI-self (F=4.956 p=0.009) and observer (F=22.100 p=0.001) reports, total scores of leadership practices significantly increased at the implementation of program. There were no significant differences between groups such as age (F=1.624, p=0.206), length of time in current job (F=0.000, p=0.989) and current position (F=0.107, p=0.746). UCN LPI self-reports were significantly higher than LPI observers? report (F=9.389, p=0.005). The results of the study revealed that special leadership program improves the transformational leadership practices of UCNs, indicating the ongoing leadership development programs necessary to keep up with the health care demands.
