Özet
Galatasaray Lisesi 1868 yılında Sultan Abdülaziz tarafından Mekteb-i Sultani adıyla kurulmustur. O yıllarda modern egitime büyük önem verilmekte ve ülke kalkınmasının bu sekilde saglanacagına inanılmaktaydı. Aynı dönemde, ilkögretim ile yüksek ögretim arasında egitim verecek okullara ihtiyaç duyulması yanında, toplumu olusturan unsurların Osmanlıcılık politikası çerçevesinde bir arada tutulmaya çalısılması da Müslüman ögrencilerle Gayrimüslim ögrencilerin bir arada egitim gördügü bir orta ögretim müessesesinin kurulmasını gerekli kılıyordu. Bu gerekçelerle kurulan Galatasaray Lisesi gerek Osmanlı, gerekse Cumhuriyet dönemlerinde ülkeye hizmet veren pek çok ögrenci yetistirdi. Galatasaray Lisesi'nde uygulanan müfredat programı agır olup bu program çerçevesinde yetisen ögrenciler yeterli bilgilerle donatılmıs olarak mezun olurlardı. Bu durum egitimlerinin sonraki asamalarında kendilerine önemli katkı saglamıstır. Mektebin, bilgi vermek yanında, ögrenciyi hayata hazırlamak gibi bir islevi de vardı. Okulda kurulan bir takım ögrenci tesekkülleri sayesinde talebe kendisini hayata hazırlama imkânı bulur, bu arada mektepte sosyal faaliyetler de hiç eksik olmazdı. Ayrıca okulda egitim veren gerek Türk, gerekse Fransız ögretmenler alanlarında uzman olan kisilerden seçilirdi. Bütün bunların bir araya gelmesiyle Galatasaray Lisesi'ni bitiren bir ögrenci hayatta basarılı olma sansını çabuk yakalamıstır. 1930'lu yıllarda Atatürk Galatasaray Lisesi'ne dört defa gelerek bu okula ne kadar önem verdigini göstermistir. Atatürk bu ziyaretlerinde bazı sınavları da bizzat kendisi yapmıstır. Galatasaray Lisesi egitim amaçlı faaliyetler yanında uzun yıllar sosyal ve kültürel faaliyetlerin de merkezi konumunda bulunmustur. Bu çerçevede okulda her yıl birçok sergi açılmıs, konserler ve tiyatro gösterileri düzenlenmistir. Galatasaray Lisesi 1950 yılına kadar ülkedeki en önde gelen orta ögretim kurumlarından biri olma vasfını devam ettirmistir. Bu yıldan günümüze kadar gelen bir süreç içinde de Galatasaray Lisesi aynı vasfını muhafaza etmektedir.

?Mekteb-i Sultani?, today known as Galatasaray College, was founded in 1868 by Sultan Abdülaziz. It was believed that the development of the country could be achieved by this way and thus, education was of great importance. In the same period, beside the need of schools functioning as a medium throughout the education period between primary school and university; it was a must that components forming the society should be brought together in the frame of ?Ottomanism? (Osmanlıcılık; The idea of bringing the Ottoman together) because Muslim and non-Muslims should be educated at the same institution. Founded on these principles, Galatasaray College has brought up a number of students who served to their countries both in the period of Ottoman Empire and Republic of Turkey. The curriculum of the college was heavy and as a result, the graduates would have sufficient amount of knowledge. And these qualifications have always participated to the stages of their education. The school had a function not only to serve as a place to transfer information but also to prepare students for life. Students had a chance to prepare themselves for life with the help of some organizations and the school served opportunities in terms of social activities. Instructors were chosen among the experts of the branches including Turkish and French teachers. All these factors coming together, a graduate of Galatasaray College had no chance but to be successful. In 1930?s, Atatürk visited Galatasaray College which shows us how great importance he gave to this school. Atatürk, in his visits, carried out the examinations himself. Galatasaray College, besides educational activities, has been the center of many social and cultural activities. Many exhibitions were displayed, concerts were given and theatres were put on stage. Galatasaray College has been the leading educational institution since 1950. From the 50?s to present, this school has been keeping its position.
