Özet (Çeviri)

EK 8: SUMMARY (İNGİLİZCE ÖZET) EK 8 SUMMARY The dissertation entitled Political Ideologies Prior To The Creek Revolution of İ82Î, presents the prevalent three main tendencies among the Greeks: aZ> Being deeply influenced by the French Revolution, Regas* main target was a democratic revolution which would take place with the participation of all the subjects of the Ottoman Empire, accomplishing a political change on a class basis rather than nat i onal 1 i ber ati on ; bD some Phanariots and leading figures of the Greek Orthodox Church formed a conservative group which urged loyalty to the Porte, opposed the“revolutionaries”and alleged satisfactory 1 i vi ng condi ti ons ; cD and the democratic group which advocated national liberation and independent state, best personified by the leading figure of Kor aes. The three groups are presented, discussed and their relevant brochures and books are presented in the appendix. In the introductory part, the formation of Greek national consciousness is discused, presenting a short history of the Greek language, the influence of Orthodoxy and of the Enlightenment. The theoretical base of the formation of a nation is also discussed, showing how education creates national consciousness. In the same chapter the political situation and tendencies in Europe as well as the economic parameters in“Greece”are presented. A chapter is allocated to Turkish historiography on the Greeks and the Greek revolution. Many historians seem not to be well informed on the latest findings with respect to the intense 3Ö£>EK b: SUMMARY (İNGİLİZCE ÖZET) controvery on ideological matters among the Greeks. The dissertation in general shows how the Greeks nation came into existence and how its national consciousness was built up. It also tries to show the social foces which had developed in this western part of the Ottoman Empire, such as a relatively dynamic bourgeois class, democratic ideals etc. Since Greece was a part öf the Ottoman Empire, an understanding of Greek history is indispensable to getting a complete picture of that Empire. 370
