18& ABSTRACT Güler Duygu. The Analysis of Teacher Education Programs for Preschool Eduacation" Master Thesis. Advisor Prof. Dr. Tanju GÜRKAN, Ankara University, Institute of Social Sciences, Ankara, 1994 This research is conducted for the purposes of identifying the institutions from which the teachers of preschool education have graduated, to get their ideas concerning the programs of these institutions, to provide the means for these teachers to self evaluate their knowledge regarding the traits that a preschool teacher should have and to anlyze the four years undergraduate proigrams that train teachers for preschool education. To achieve these purposes, in this research a survey is conducted with 43 teachers from official primary schools that have a kindergarten and that are located in the central provinces of Ankara. In addition, the survey is also conducted with 300 teachers that are continuing the Pre-graduate Completion Program at Vocational Education Faculty of Gazi University. The survey is focusing on a self evaluation of the basic knowledge and ability of the teachers in preschool education. Subsequently, undergraduate programs, that train teachers for preschool education are analyzed in terms of courses and credits. According to the findings of the research, the sample group is comprised of:187 88.05 % Teachers graduated from Girls' Vocation High School and attending to Pregraduate Completion Program of Gazi University. 8.75 % Graduates of four years Vocational Education Faculty of Gazi University, Child Development and Education Training. 3.20 % Teachers graduated from two years Pregraduate Program. W hen the teachres are asked to make a self evaluation in terms of their current level as compared to the quality and knowledge that should be possessed by a qualified preschool teacher, the teachers in the sample group reached a concensus about their current level as being good. However, they found their undergraduate programs. (Girls' Vocational High School and two years Pregraduate Programs) as being unsatisfactory in terms of theoretical and practical courses. On the basis of the analysis conducted on the undergraduate programs that train teachers for preschool education, it is found that there is a major discrepancy between the course types of the programs and the cumulative credits required for graduation. It is found out that the courses of knowledge of subject matter, core program professional knowledge of teaching and teaching practices are thought in dissimilar forms in all the programs.
