80 @ SUMMARY The Letters of the Byzantine emperor Manuel H.Paleologus for the first time by E.Legrand in Î893 in Paris. Then, in 1977, these letters were made available in a new edition by G.T. Dennis, in which they are translated into English, accompanied by the appropriate comments and, in most cases, accurately dated. These letters include very important information for studying the history of Byzantium and the Ottoman State in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. In this study, based on the text of G.T. Dennis, I have translated letters number 12-42 dating from the period of Bayezid I. (1389-1402) and added a chapter on Bayezid and Manuel II. Paiaoiogus. These letters constitute a most valuable contemporary source for the years 1389-1402, because they help to fill a part of the much“deplored gap”in Byzantine historia graphy. Moreover, they include evidence which sheds light on some details of early Ottoman history; for example, conflict between Sultan Bayezid L and the ruler of Sivas, Kadi Burhan al-Din Ahmad in 1391 and Bayezid Ps siege of Istanbul (Constantinople) in 1394-1402. There is also important material on Manuel's voyage to the west in search of Old ( 1 399- 1 402).
