Özet

Bu çalışmanın konusunu, özellikle 16., 17. ve 18. yüzyıllarda Hollanda sanatında yaygın olarak ele alınan grup portreciliği içinde 17. ve 18. yüzyıllarda sadece Hollanda'da ortaya çıkan ve gelişen cerrahlar loncası portreleri oluşturmaktadır. Üç ana bölümde incelenen çalışmada ilk bölüm; 17. ve 18. yüzyıllarda Hollanda'nın genel siyasi, sosyal ve sanat yaşamına odaklanmaktadır. Portre sanatının Hollanda sanatı içindeki yeri ve buna bağlı olarak söz konusu yüzyıllarda dini, ticari ve toplumsal yaşamın bir sonucu olarak daha da gelişen grup portreciliğinin ortaya çıkış nedenleri ve gelişimi, verilen çeşitli örnekler eşliğinde incelenmiştir. Birinci ve üçüncü bölümlerde, Alois Riegl'ın The Group Portraiture of Holland adlı yapıtı temel alınarak, yazarın grup portreciliği ile ilgili ortaya koyduğu ölçütlere yer verilmiştir. Çalışmanın ikinci bölümünde; Avrupa'da anatomi çalışmalarının tarihine değinilmiş, önce Padua, Londra ve Paris gibi Avrupa şehirlerindeki anatomi tiyatroları, ardından da Leiden, Amsterdam ve Delft'teki anatomi tiyatroları ve çalışmaları irdelenmiştir. Üçüncü bölüm ise tezin ana bölümünü oluşturmaktadır. Söz konusu bu son bölümde, Amsterdam ve Delft Cerrahlar Loncaları'nın sipariş ettikleri yağlıboya resimler ve Leiden Üniversitesi cerrahlarının kitapları için yaptırdıkları illüstrasyonlar incelenmiştir. Bu yapıtların ortaya çıkışları, gelişimleri ve ele alınış biçimleri üzerinde durulmuş ve gelişimleri sırasında ortaya çıkan farklı betimleme biçimleri belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır.Sonuç bölümünde ise, Hollanda'da 17. yüzyılda ortaya çıkan cerrahlar loncası portrelerinin kompozisyon ve betimleme mantığı açısından gösterdiği gelişme hakkındaki görüşler ortaya konmuştur. 18. yüzyıldan itibaren ise söz konusu cerrahlar loncası portrelerindeki kompozisyonların kendini tekrarlayan ve yeni bir şey katmayan özellikleri gösterilerek ve bu geleneğin nasıl kaybolduğu anlatılmaya çalışılmıştır.

The present thesis is an attempt to examine the outstanding examples of surgeons? guilds portraiture of 17th- and 18th-century Netherlands, a genre that came into being and matured solely in the abovementioned country as a certain kind of portraiture tradition within the prevalent context of group portraiture painting in the Netherlands during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The thesis comprises three main parts, first of which offers a brief outline of political, social and artistic milieu of the Netherlands in the 17th and 18th centuries. This outline is followed by an analysis of the reasons for the emergence and rise of group portraiture painting in Dutch art, a genre that should be studied in relation to religious, commercial, and social transformations during the aforesaid centuries. The analysis, drawing on many illustrative paintings, also makes use of the criteria concerning group portraiture as put forth in Alois Riegl?s The Group Portraiture of Holland in the first and third parts of the thesis. The second part deals with the history of anatomical studies in historically prominent cities in Europe in order to examine the anatomy theatres and studies in the Dutch cities of Leiden, Amsterdam, and Delft. The third part, which comprises the main body of the study, examines oil paintings commissioned by the Surgeons? Guilds of the cities of Amsterdam and Delft, and book illustrations ordered by the surgeons of the University of Leiden. In this final part, a study of the emergence and transformation of these works as well as of their manifestations in diverse forms is carried out in relation to the depiction styles that developed during various phases of this transformation. The conclusion eventually recapitulates and emphasizes the developments related to composition and depiction techniques of surgeons? guild portraiture paintings analyzed in the previous parts of the study, which have their roots in the rise of anatomical sciences in 17th-century Netherlands. The eventual demise brought about by the stagnation and repetitiveness into which the tradition of surgeons? guild portraiture fell during the 18th century forms the concluding remark of the study.
