Özet
Bu çalışmanın amacı, 5. Sınıf fen ve teknoloji dersinde gazetelerden faydalanarak hazırlanan ders etkinliklerinin, öğrencilerin akademik başarıları, tutumları ve eleştirel düşünme becerilerine etkisini belirlemek, öğrencilerin gazetelerden faydalanılarak hazırlanmış olan etkinliklere ve fen ve teknoloji derslerinde gazete kullanımına yönelik görüşlerini tespit etmektir. Çalışma 2009-2010 eğitim-öğretim yılında Kocaeli ili İzmit ilçesindeki bir ilköğretim okuluna devam eden, 100 beşinci sınıf öğrencisi ile yapılmıştır. Okuldaki, iki sınıf deney, iki sınıf kontrol grubu olarak seçilmiştir. Fen ve teknoloji dersinde, `Maddenin Değişimi ve Tanınması' ünitesi boyunca, deney gruplarında ders kitaplarındaki etkinliklerin yanı sıra gazetelerden faydalanılarak hazırlanan ders etkinlikleri uygulanırken, kontrol gruplarında yalnızca ders kitaplarından faydalanılarak hazırlanan etkinlikler uygulanmıştır.Araştırmada, karma araştırma modeli kullanılmıştır. Öğrencilerin akademik başarı, tutum ve eleştirel düşünme becerisi puanları araştırmanın nicel verilerini oluşturmuştur, bu verilerin analizinde nicel veri analiz yöntemleri kullanılmıştır. Öğrencilerin uygulanan gazete etkinlikleri ve öğretimde gazete kullanılması ile ilgili görüşleri ise araştırmanın nitel verilerini oluşturmuştur, bu veriler hem nitel hem nicel analiz yöntemleri ile değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırmanın nicel kısmında, ön test-son test deney kontrol gruplu yarı deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın nitel kısmında ise, deney grubundaki öğrencilerle ilgili veriler, yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler ve yazışma tekniği ile toplanmıştır.Araştırmanın nicel verilerinin analizine göre, gazetelerden faydalanılarak hazırlanan ders etkinlikleri ile desteklenen fen ve teknoloji derslerinin, öğrencilerin akademik başarı, fen ve teknoloji dersine yönelik tutum ve eleştirel düşünme becerileri üzerine anlamlı etkisi olmuştur. Araştırmanın nitel verilerinin analizlerine göre ise, öğrencilerin fen ve teknoloji derslerinde gazete kullanımına ve uygulanan etkinliklere yönelik görüşlerinin genelde olumlu olduğu tespit edilmiştir.

The aim of this study is to determine effect of applying activities based on newspaper in 5th grade science and technology lesson resulting in pupils? academic achievement, their attitudes and critical thinking skills and to determine their views towards the activities based on newspaper and usage of newspapers in science and technology courses. The sample of this study is constituted by 100 pupils who were 5th grade from a primary school in Kocaeli in 2009-2010. Two control group and two experiment group were selected from this school. During the ?Identification and Change of Matter? in science and technology lesson, while activities based on newspaper were being applied with the activities based on course book to the experiment groups, control groups were applied activities based on only course book activities.Mixed methods research design was used in the study. Pupils? academic achievement, attitudes and critical thinking skills points formed the quantitative data of the research, and quantitative data analysis method was used for the analysis of these data. Pupils? views about newspaper activities and about using newspaper activities in lessons formed qualitative data. These data were analysed with both qualitative and quantitative analysing methods. In the quantitative part of the research, pretest-posttest control group design was used. In the qualitative part of the research, the pupils? views about the using newspaper in science and technology lessons were gathered with semi-structured interview and their views about newspaper activities were gathered with correspondence method.According to quantitative analysis, the science and technology lessons supported by newspaper activities have a significant effect on students? academic achievement, attitudes towards science and technology lessons and critical thinking skills. Beside, according to qualitative data? analysis, it was determined that the pupils? has positive views towards the activities based on newspapers.
