ABSTRACT In addition to chemical sludges formed in water and wastewater treatment, many industries produce waste sludges that must be disposed of. Industrial sludges are often of little value as soil conditioners and, in fact, are often highly toxic. Therefore, the disposal of waste sludge is a complex problem that can affect air, soil and water environment. The ultimate disposal of such sludges has been a headache for years, and increasing pressureby government agencies and private groups has reduced disposal alternatives. Thus, the large-scale disposal of waste sludge is one of i the major concern of any municipality. Currently, the most common methods of sludge disposal are ocean dumping, landfilling, and agricultural use. All these disposal alternatives have varying degrees of environmental impacts. Its abundance poses disposal problems that can be drastically reduced if waste sludge can be converted for economical uses in construction as substitute materials. Therefore, there is a need for alternative solutions of the problem of sludge disposal. One possible solution lies in the solidification of the waste s ludge. The disposal of hazardous waste by landfill is an important method of disposal in many countries. In fact, the continued use of landfill and special chemical landfill for hazardous waste disposal is a generally accepted principle in many countries. In the developed countries, international aggrement is substantial that the most important, potentally harmfull result of hazardous waste landfill is the pollution of water resources, particularly groundwater. These kind of wastes must be needed pre- treatment before they can be considered safe for landfilling. One of the major and more well- established of the pre- landfill treatment process is solidification method. In this study, the treatment sludges which is taken from Gökdere Tannery Wastewater Treatment Plant were used. Because of, high - x -.0. ill"' :Vr\csfjui MEfil&üchromium concentrations in these treatment sludges, it is not suitable to dispose them directly. Therefore, it was aimed to fix the chromium inside of solidified material by adding different additive materials and making it solidified. These additive materials are cement, sand., fly ash and Famerit Waste (square floor tile waste) and water. At first, properties of raw sludge were determined as a result of the various chemical analieses applied on the raw sludge. The raw sludge is solidified with cement and additive materials directly and left to solidification in 28 day periods. At the end of this time, 28 mixtures are prepeared and they are undergone the breaking procedure with the aim of determining their compressive strength. At the second step is elutriation tests which are very important to investigate fixing of pollution concentrations in the solidified material. By applying standard elutriation tests to the samples taken from the mixtures with received compressive strength impacts, it is observed what kind of a product is obtained related to the first impacts received in the raw s ludge. In conclusion, solidification method can be considered as a method high in cost, but pratical in application for hazardous wastes. That's why as applicable in the future, the solidification method can be also implied as construction materials in construction sector or material used for filling, instead of direct disposal to the nature and this can be applied as a possible alternative solution when compared to the preceding studies carried out. - ii -
